Mg4 trophy sales drop like a stone!

Just a simple BYD logo on the back would have sufficed. As an electric SUV, it does look pretty smart, but I’m not sold on the “gym” interior design.
Yes, if I want the gym I know how to get there, but I suspect this is what they think young people want. Shame few of them can afford an EV.

Don't you want to build your dreams?!

Didn't you know that a car is the route to a fulfilling future for you and your family? 🤣

I agree it is a bit cheesy but hardly something to reject a car over.
No I think you would literally have people laughing behind your back 😂

We’ve several young guys at work who’ve recently renewed their cars.
It’s not a money thing, I know what they’re paying and they could easily afford umpteen EVs.
It’s more of a lack of EVs that appeal to youngsters.
They’ve gone for sporty BMWs and Audis, they’re not interested in a BYD SUV in a month of Sundays.
The money is there, the cars aren’t.

The only car that comes close to a young person's car in the ev world right now is probably the cupra Born, it's the most hot hatch type ev out there.

And to be fair it is the quickest 0-60 of the ev hatchbacks

Cupra is an unknown name to them though.
Young’uns are brand name daft, they simply aren’t going to entertain MG/BYD/Xpeng.
We really need VW/Audi/BMW to come out with smaller EVs.
If VW launched the ID2 now, my god it would sell like you wouldn’t believe
Such a shame it’s years away.

Cupra isn't a newly created brand for EVs.
SEAT have long used it to mark the racey-boi editions of their usual ICE hatchbacks.

Having said that, SEAT will be VAG's "small" EV producer for all their brands.

I'm not claiming it's a 'prestige' brand by any stretch but interestingly Cupra is proving such a success there is talk the Seat name could ultimately be abandoned completely:

The BYD Atto 3 has been available since August last year in New Zealand. I bought one in September and so far have done 14,000 trouble free km. Somebody in this thread made the comment that the A3 is priced like a premium car. Fair comment, and fair to say too that it is a premium car. BYD are now by far the world's largest seller of plug in vehicles (PHEV+EV) despite not yet having launched in the North American market, and have been making EVs for about 12 years now. Testament to their reliability is that BYD taxis are all pervasive in China. So far in New Zealand the A3 has scooped 7 Car of the Year trophys including the most prestigous NZ Auto Writers Guild overall COTY. BYD's Blade battery is generally regarded as being as good as any and better than most, but bear in mind that there are many different criteria to judge batteries by. The Blade trumps the pack for durability and safety. Amongst others, Tesla have entered into a battery supply agreement with BYD, Toyota are reported as having entered into a joint venture with BYD to build EVs after their rather checkered efforts with the BZ4. The Atto 3 is a very good car indeed.
And while I am on the soapbox, please don't take my post as negating in any way the MG4. We don't have them in New Zealand yet but I can see from the many overseas reports that the 4 is a wickedly good car. I would be stoked to have an MG4 parked in my garage, alongside my Atto 3.

I didn’t say it was a new brand, I’m fully aware of who Cupra are.
Same as I’m aware of who Abarth and Alpina are.
Doesn’t change my point in any way.
Young guys with money want brands, and until Audi/BMW come out with EVs that appeal to them they are going to stick with ICE.
The only brand that’s come close to converting these sorts of people are Tesla, no one else.

Ha.. If a young bloke wants to pull a Greta, he needs to get an EV... Hmmm... :sneaky:

Whilst waiting for Mg to sort out all the problems before a order one I’ve now changed my mind completely due to new competition.

The BYD Atto 3 is now available from stratstone. The price looks very pricey for an unknown Chinese car but the advertised price has a £4K dealer contribution, so £34k against the trophy at £33.2k. The Atto has metallic paint, electric panoramic roof, HEAT PUMP and most importantly rear passenger lights😂
The spec makes the trophy seriously over priced, which I have always thought. The SE is the only mg to consider buying. I can see some serious discounts on the trophy.

To top it all the Atto is available for immediate delivery and a very competitive pcp.

I’m not sure if I should get the Atto or wait until the end of the year for the Fisker sport at £36k, I do know that the trophy is out of the running unless there is a serious price drop!

I looked at the You Tube reports and all the "experts' and even Kryton from Red Dwarf rated the MG4 as the car to get. LOL
Are you on a BYD forum as well to gauge the new car issues ?
From your comments it looks like your priority is metallic paint, sunroof and rear interior lights, that's your choice. The 'Bling cant be that good if the var is as cheap as they are selling it for.
I would ask that if in your view if £1800 is seriously over priced against the MG4, what is it compared to the other big competitor VW ID3.
So guessing we may just see you back complaining about the range on your BYD ;)

As said previous no competition out there in terms of the complete package (price, range, equipment) for the two SE cars. The trophy was an excellent deal at the outset, as has been debated to the cows come home, with @tsedge deal, nothing around to beat that.
Now though with the price and Apr rise it's in the ball park with other better cars.
In terms of the BYD it remains to be seen how it will get on, it's certainly competition in the price segment and we'll specced.
Their battery tech is supposed to be amongst the best available, with their blade battery, so it will be interesting to see how that performs. If you want an ev SUV then it undercuts most on the market.

I agree, personally I dislike the Atto but I expect it will be appealing to a segment of the market. Whether it is good/bad in terms of ownership we will find out, too early to know.

I don’t agree that SUVs are “fashions” because fashions come and go.
SUVs aren’t going anywhere.
It’s been said time and time again many people prefer the ease of access of an SUV.
Easier to get in and out, easier to get kids strapped into a seat without breaking your back etc
I don’t see why body style is important, engine is.
So if Chantarelle buys one of these to get Urethra to school instead of an ICE, great.

PS just you wait and see, it won’t be long until there’s a higher version of the 4 comes along.
That would have been more sensible than their vanity project performance version.
body style does have some relevance: 'suv'-styles tend to be rather - in aerodynamic terms - 'bluff'-body shapes, therefore significantly have higher drag coefficients and larger projected areas, giving a much higher 'drag area' (the number that counts in aerodynamic efficiency). Hence suv's as a genre will have rather higher energy consumption than a teardrop-style car - and the Tesla car form...

The Atto has a drag coefficient of 0.29cd, which is pretty damned good.
Same as the latest Vauxhall corsa and not much worse than the MG4 (0.27 to 0.285 depending on model)
The front of a car is only part of the aerodynamics story, how it ‘leaves’ the air behind it is a huge part too.

Firstly those recommendations are from some time ago and made before the Byd was available. The price difference is only £800 and for that you get a full panoramic sunroof not a little sunroof and a Heat pump, which will give a much better range in the winter. Just those two additions over the trophy make it the sensible choice but add in a much better interior, alloy wheels without some horrible plastic cover and more importantly a car without a ton of problems and safety issues. You’d have to be a complete numpty to purchase an mg4 to save £800
