Should we be worried? 🤔

Well I read all you ex petrol heads reviews with amusement. I think most of us just want to go about our lives in some comfort and not worry about the G force attainable by our method of transport!
You may be right but part of owning an EV is the driving experience and the instant power it provides. I defy anyone not to enjoy that now and then!

This is probably a difficult question to answer, though interested to hear various opinions.

Seems there are quite a few of us awaiting delivery of our shiny new MG4s. Spending time reading the forums and the numerous issues is enough to give anybody serious doubts, especially with reports of folk handing their cars back or trying to get out of deals.

So, is there cause to be seriously concerned, or are the forums a disproportionate representation of people who have issues posting for advice, with a very large majority of MG4 owners pretty satisfied with their purchase (and not using these forums!)?

Would appreciate happy ownership comments for reassurance 😅 (My blue SE SR just arrived in Portbury, awaiting delivery)
MG4 is Great car for the money. Just some annoying glitches with FW ref schedule charging but drive is perfect. No issues that others have had and very happy with it

It is annoying how many EVs die a death north of 70-80mph.
The power levels should mean they keep going strong.
Even +200bhp EVs are topping out at 100 and taking a while to get that last few mph, which is quite honestly pathetic.

The manufacturers really dont want you to go that fast as the energy required to do so will discharge the battery in no time.

My ICE car has a display that provides a figure for the current power developed. Doing average speeds of 40-60 on the flat / mild hills it will show the engine is making 20-40kw. Or around 50hp in old money. The faster you go the power required to do so increases exponentially

Now let’s consider we are going to hammer our evs foot down, way over 100. Ignoring that the 150kw motor is only constant rated to around 90kw…..

So we have a 62kw battery powering the motor balls out so we can stomp Audis on the Autobahn. 150kw power from a 62kw battery is about 25 mins of operation.

The typical EV power to battery calculation expects you to be a 40-60 pootler and not a Bhanstormer

It is a bit, gives you a slight inferiority complex when you're jostling with the turbodiesels in the outside lane.
2 speed auto shift like a Taycan would cure it but I can't see that being cost effective at this end of the market.
Topping out at the kind of speed where the Federales might still let you off with a warning has benefits for your licence I guess 🚔
As I've pointed out before, not a problem I've noticed. Our MG4 (can't speak for anyone else's ;-)) accelerates extremely well from 130 km/h to 160 km/h (not that I'd be doing that anywhere except in Germany, of course, hem hem); I've not noticed any sudden power drop – rather the opposite. Of course it tops out somewhere around 165 km/h, but given that anything north of 110 km/h hits the battery hard, why would I want to drive at 160+ km/h all the time in any case?

I enormously appreciate the acceleration – otherwise, I drive at max. 120 km/h on motorways most of the time.

If you feel like yours rockets between 80 and 100 mph then I can only say you have a good one.
My SE definitely starts signalling my push-in-the-back-o-meter that its had enough at around 70 mph.
The Trophy's longer gearing certainly stretches that out a little, the one I tried was game up to around 80, but didn't feel like it would still be hauling at 100

It is a Trophy (in the UK), but maybe we have been lucky, judging by other reactions. It certainly hauls *rse well above 80. Of course it doesn't go over 100 (in theory), but I've had the meter reading 167 km/h on a couple of occasions, which suggests the limiter is somewhat relaxed (or that the meter is somewhat relaxed, of course!)

However, the MG4 is a lovely car even at much lower speeds, and in-motion acceleration is exceptional from pretty much any speed.

Also, we've concluded range anxiety is deffo overstated – especially if, like us, you're not using the car every day. For lack of a 7.4 kW charger, we've been granny-charging the car since we bought it (with a couple of fast charges being the exception), and once you get used to treating it like a smartphone (i.e. topping up whenever convenient), it's brilliant.

Also, it appears granny-charging is a great deal better for the battery. We do recharge at 10 amps rather than 8, after taking advice from our electrician. He thinks the cable to the outdoor socket may even support 13 amps, so not far short of a 3.4 kW reinforced plug, but will be able to confirm that once he's looked at the wiring (he'll probably have to adjust the fuse, too). That would speed things up a little from their current snail's pace ;-)

If you're using the car for long-ish drives every day, of course, you'll undoubtedly want a Wallbox or equivalent.

People's impressions of acceleration depend a lot on what they are used to and what they compare it to, one person's "haul arse" is another's "runs out of puff".

I previously owned a Golf GTi Performance with 245bhp and 6.5s 0-60 time. Though faster than the MG4 I prefer the MG4's rear drive, power delivery, smoothness and 50:50 weight distribution. For all practical purposes, the MG4 feels as fast and is much more comfortable in how the power is delivered.

I am not really interested in what happens above 80, I don't drive at those speeds.

Love my car. Have had good service from the dealer. Undertray had a slight bulge that I can't summon the energy to worry about. I adjusted settings of LKA and it doesn't bother me.
Even with price rise and others dropping I don't think there's a better value EV on the market.

If you want perfection, it's not the car for you. Yes, there's (what I think) is a small chance you'll need to fight to get some issues sorted. But chances are you'll be delighted. And of course, you could switch plans and get a lemon elsewhere.

You can always reject the car within thirty days if you're not happy (though that's likely to be a pain in the Rs for most people I guess).
I agree about car perfection. In my experience any make of car is not perfect, and new and innovative designs by any manufacturer always provoke strong feelings.
I am sure there will be a few things I find irritating but any will be out weighed by the positives. I am collecting my Red Trophy 28 March exactly 13 weeks after ordering but sooner than I expected. 😊

Like you I'm still waiting for mine, and like you I've had the odd doubt of have I made the right decision.
There are a few owners who have had a problem or two with their MG4 and have taken the decision to return them but they are also very vocal about the faults and post about them multiple times which can give a distorted view.
Most of the problems that have occurred are software related and a lot of them have, or are, being updated. The oil leak seems to still be work in progress but there seems to be fewer occurrences among the later batches of cars. The undertray bulge is only slight on the later cars and LKA has been tamed with the latest updates.

When you say made the decision to return them, how does that work?

It would have to be a serious fault wouldn’t it? What are some examples of such a serious fault that the dealer agrees to take the car back and refund in full?

“You can always reject the car within thirty days if you're not happy (though that's likely to be a pain in the Rs for most people I guess).”

You would have to come up with a serious fault or reason wouldn’t you? And would you get your money back easily?

I don't disagree with any of that! ;-)

Definitely the nicest car I've ever owned.

Within 30 days you get a full refund

Mine is still on order and have had reservations but no other similar car is near it on price and would at least be an extra £100 per month so I’ll ride it out and hope for the best
Hi
If it helps , I ordered on 26th September 2022, was advised it would be around xmas, eventually picked up 4th March 2023. I followed all the 'horrifying' issues / complaints, and put this down to brand new car ironing out real world issues ( The ID3 when released had ' horror ' stories as well ). as time went in these started to get ironed out but you will always get the odd lemon / Friday car and these owners will be the most verciferous in thier complaints. Ours hasn't been completely faultless but the issue is very minor - The radio is random whether it comes back on when starting the car. The LKA seems to be a common gripe that it wont stay off and this I agree with, I am going to pester the dealer to speak to MG to do an update to rectify this. By the time yours arrives hopefully these will have been sorted. (My sons ID3 is nowhere near what the original production run cars were like, its massively improved and I can see where VW are charging the big price difference but personally cannot see how they come to this ).
If you have test driven your car, ask for a repeat test drive and if you still like it , Hang in there it will be worth the wait.

If you are really interested in finding more about the facts I would suggest some research will help.
here for example.

Heh, yes, LKA still comes on all the time, so part of the setoff ritual is (a) switching off LKA and (b) switching off sign recognition (which is truly awful, at least out here in rural areas). The radio is fine, but the voice-driven AI assistant is pretty random – sometimes she's vocal, sometimes she refuses to say anything. But since I don't rely on it for anything, I'm really not bothered.
