MG4 First Impressions...err Foibles

I must admit - I generally shy away from forums because you get to hear about quite a few problems. Especially about the car you have just ordered and are jumping up and down like a kid getting the best toy in the shop. But then I suppose that’s the whole idea of forums so you get an insight…perhaps I should have read further before jumping!! I will keep reading😎
Be careful with further reading 😉

I will - but I will look away at the scary bits🤣🤣
It is all great apart from the ahem... oily bit... and the cough wibbly-wobbly bit and that fact that it is a teensy bit more secure that you might ideally like!

But, more seriously, all have fixes provided or pending and MG have been quick to figure out what to do. They have awful communication and its been an awful experience for some of those affected by these problems, but they are getting it steadily sorted out.

I’m yet to see a single commonly reported issue resolved so I’m not ready to dish out the praise so readily. Hopeful but not yet satisfied.

A number of people have reported the oil refill and breather has fixed their oil leak problem, a fix for the lock-ins is being applied as we speak and multiple people have reported their cars getting it, the undertray has multiple reports from MG of a solution been developed and being tested, update on that soon. We'll see how good these fixes are over time.

This is only a few weeks after launch. With some manufacturers it has taken more than a year for them even to acknowledge a problem exists, let alone fix it.

I think he might mean after getting in. On my MG4 it boots up into ready when you sit in the seat and starts running the heating. If you switch on the heated seats and wheel it turns them on, but, when you put your foot on the brake to start the car they turn off again.

It is slightly irritating when you forget the correct order and have to turn them on again.
Yes I meant that. Car in P, turn on heated steering wheel, car in D, heated steering wheel goes off, and we have to turn it on again. Annoying indeed

The saga continues.
My MG4 Trophy LR has been pretty much bob on for the last four months. I say pretty much becuase there have been the occasional glitch with the Phone connection since then (Even my recent switch from Android based to Apple hasn't fixed that), the most curious one is having to press the right star button (I use this for the HVAC) to bring up and then turn off the HVAC controls on the RH button before I can use the square "Hat" switch to control the volume. Then yesterday, two issues, first on my way out to get my nails done...the USB port would not connect to my phone, not even to charge, though the wireless charger did still function).

Getting out of the car (disconnecting my phone first), locking and unlocking did not sort the issue. After said nail appointment I got back in my car to come home and it miraculously worked fine.

That aftenoon an impromptu trip to the supermarket and I got a load of bing bongs and errors. The cause of the errors; an Intelegent Driving Assist Sensor failure resulting in a Forward Collision System Failure, naturally killing all the functions that need those systems. I took a video of it (screen grab below). Again after going into the supermarket and coming back to the car the fault had cleared. Before anybody asks, the 12 volt battery is showing 14v and the sensor wasn't obstructed (was expecting a big blob of bird poop or something but it was clear).

The software on these cars is garbage.

100% - My car has been in to dealer approx 10 times now over my 6 months of ownership. Still plagued with software issues. Drove to Harrogate on Thursday last week, 188 miles, 5 software reboots needed (while driving) as it just locks up and refuses to do anything. Auto lights must have switched off and on 15 times during glorious sunshine between 17:00 and 18:00 when no bloody lights even needed thus switching on/off dark mode so I cant see my apple maps in car play. I cant even use the "square hat" thingy as apparently my charging door is open (clue, it isn't even). Feel your pain.

Good job of the nails. Are you a Hull fan or Rovers fan or just cannot decide. Black and Red Nails. Sorry couldn’t resist. 🤓
I will get my coat.

That's not a good experience, if you dealer hasn't been able to sort it maybe it is time to try a different dealer. Mine doesn't do that.

It is straightforward to use manual lights, just click to the right to turn auto lights off.

Charging door could be a fault with the latch/sensor.

My dealer has been very good, can only work within the constraints MG set and with the quality of car they have built

There is a Thread here with many people having same issue. I await delivery of a 3d printed cover for the light sensor which lets more light through. Could wait for a potential fix from manufacturer but, MG

Thanks for the tip 😂. I shouldn’t need to, this is really basic stuff. Already have auto high beam switched off as it is so poorly calibrated. Again, 1st car I ever had an issue with this feature.

I would presume so.

Yet another fault on a 6 month old car. So far, new tyres, new rear brakes, new passenger door switch, new drivers foot rest, oil leak, new breather, many software glitches requiring reboot while driving despite several updates, can’t preheat while charging, battery preheating not working since last update, scheduled charging not working, remote app frequently loses connection to car, sound insulation missing from under bonnet, 10 visits to dealer and counting another on Friday

Yes, you have definitely had more than your share of the problems with an early batch car, big shame. Surprised though that your dealer can't resolve the software problems, module updates should do that - though from what we learned on the podcast it can take hours to update all so maybe the dealer has been selective.

Good luck getting it sorted at the next visit.

Just FYI, I presumed you did know how to do the manual lights but was also posting for others reading who might not know. It is so easy for me do that the auto lights sensitivity doesn't bother me. I don't need such things automated.

Thats dreadful. Thinking of lights, when reversing into my garage and the car switches from day to night mode (oversensitive light sensor) it shuts down the reversing camera. Necessitating me putting it in park and then back to reverse to renable the reversing camera.

Haha, neither, I'm not a rugby fan 😄

I like this simple feature automated and working reliably as it has been on every car I’ve owned in the last 30 years. It annoys me that MG can’t get such a simple thing right. I do know there are owners such as yourself who are fine with it.

Not good surprised youve managed to stick with it, although the hardware faults are becoming fewer the software continues to be on the flaky side. I'd be hoping by now they'd have figured out what versions of modules work the best together and gave the most stable platform on each model
