A healthy discussion. As you don't have to have the green stripe on your number plates as an EV owner. Im thinking about having my front number plate display the green stripe and not on the rear. Why I hear you asking. As there are no benefits at the moment for having them on your number plate apart from informing everybody that your car is an EV maybe I could have a bit of fun especially cars approaching from the rear and not realising its an EV.

Funnily enough I reported a Mercedes hybrid to the police for displaying green badge plates yesterday.
I see it from time to time on my commute.
I messaged the main dealer that supplied the plates and, despite their assurances, they’ve evidently done sod all about contacting the owner and getting them replaced.
So, sod it, time the owner was made to change them.

To further the illusion why not have a dummy exhaust fitted?

On Monday I was faffing around connecting my car to the freebie charging outside the botanic gardens at Dawick. I was actually standing in the other charging bay, when a big maroon car started to reverse towards me, and a woman leaned out of the window. Seeing no green flash I asked her where she was trying to get to (she could have been reversing to get into a space in the row in front). She indicated that she was aiming for the EV charging spot. I said, fairly mildly, "you're not an electrive vehicle?"

She said yes she was, much to my embarrassment. I said something about not knowing how recently they started putting green stripes on the number plates, and she must be a veteran EV driver compared to my newbie status. We ended up companionably connecting our cars to the dual charger, but I felt a bit of a lemon.

Another question. Since these green stripes are in the position of the blue stripes ICE cars have which carry (or used to carry) the country flag, the EU stars and the code for the country, can we put similar stickers on our green stripes? I'm sure I've got some saltire stickers of a suitable size somewhere.

I have my private plate spaced ‘illegally’

I think you can.

Yes you can they had some green plate with country codes displaying in my local motorist centre when I popped in the other day. Preferable option if required driving abroad over a large random sticker on the back of the car.

Thanks to both of you. So I could just put a saltire sticker and an SCO sticker on the green bit, and that would be fine, I think. I'm not thinking about going abroad right now. I used to go defiantly abroad with plates that showed (in descending order) the saltire flag, the EU stard and SCO, and defy anybody to object. (They didn't, although one or two people didn't get it at first and were curious.) Now, though,

I think he means its a bit hypocritical.

And the fact you are getting away with illegal spacing kinda shows you already the police dont care a flying kipper

I don’t see it as hypocritical, I’m not trying to pass my car off as something it’s not.

Where I live, in Sheffield, green numberplates get free parking.
*you have to register with the council 1st
You don't have to have a green number plate for that. I have the Sheffield free EV parking permit and no green number plate. They use ANPR.

This is the thing with people who think they’re ‘cheating the system’ by putting green plates on their ICE/hybrid.
No benefit systems are going to work by that alone, they’re all going to be ANPR, so why the hell bother?
They’re just thick, aren’t they.

I agree they are two different things and the spacing requirements are really only there for the early ANPR systems, I don't think it is an issue for the modern kit.

Changes to lettering are a bit different: then people are trying to distort the plate meaning. Passing your car off as something it isn't is another form of this.
