Just had second service (17,064 odometer reading) on my MG EV, and, at top of the Vehicle Health Check Report (hatched in RED) was Immediate Attention required for Front & Rear Brakes.
Front Brake Pads 10.0mm Remaining Front brake discs lipped and recommended replacement when pads are due
Rear Brakes - discs pitted

Price for this was £804.62

I was told at collection 'don't worry about it yet .... just letting you know' So why IMMEDIATE attention with 10mm remaining on pads (which is almost as new thickness)?

I expect IMMEDIATE ATTENTION to mean RIGHT NOW - not sometime in the future!

Spoke with the service department this morning who confirmed that it was not a major issue, and, was not requiring immediate attention. He advised that they would look to change the manner of how they informed customers in future; suggest perhaps hatch in YELLOW for future action?

He also agreed with me that turning KERS to 1 from current 3 would probably eliminate most, if not all, the corrosion as I would be using the brake pads.

In future I will only use KERS 1 as the cost of replacement discs FAR outweighs the benefit of a few extra KWh's input to battery when using the motor to brake.

Also, as the car is out of warranty (except for the electrical stuff as defined in T&C's) is it ok to use non MG dealer for things like brake pad/disc replacement?

Anyone done this?

Any garage can service or do work on your car as long as they follow MG guidlines and genuine parts. You lose the AA memebership though if you don't use an MG dealer for the service (worth about £140).

Even in kers1 when you brake the discs are not used unless you brake haverly as it will always try an regen first.
I just stamp on the brakes every now and again to clean them up.

Find yourself a hill near by and drive down it once a week. That should keep the disks clean. :)

Over a 1000 pounds for disks on first service no joy with mg sh*t after sales
If I understand it correctly, it was the second service on the ZS EV ( Gen1 ) and it was an estimated cost of £804.62 for parts and labour.
It should have been listed as a simple customer advisory and NOT an emergency work request.
Purely a dealer looking to generate some extra work in my opinion !.
When I checked last, there was NO third party parts available for the ZS EV yet.
Simple serviceable items like pads and disc’s still not available as of yet !.
Currently these basic service parts are ONLY available via a main MG dealership and therefore they are cashing in on pricing what they like, for what really is pretty much standard “run of the mill” disc’s and pads.
They is nothing really special in these items.
If these parts already have an approved patent applied to them, we may never see any third party cheaper alternatives on offer.
The pads on the OP’s car have clearly not done any serious amount of work as such.
This is proven by the amount of brake pad martial still left on them !.
The lack of any real work done by the friction brakes due to regen braking, has resulted in the steel disc’s / rotors displaying evidence of both surface rust and therefore pitting to the surface of the steel discs prematurely.
Pure lack of use of the friction brakes is the cause of this situation.
Dealers clearly see this as a target / opportunity to advise on what I believe to be a premature replacement of these components.
MOT testing will be firmly locked into these components, as an easy target on almost every EV to be sure.
Money spinner.

Mine has about 30k on it now and the rear brakes are fooked. Larger chunks coming off the discs, left and right side. The fronts have around 10mm on the circumference which isn't clearing up with hard braking. They should all be changed really.

Sourcing parts is a pain, I did find an MG dealer doing the rear discs for £120/pair. Rear pads can be found at a reasonable price £20/pair. Front discs aren't a bad price off eBay at~£80/pair. Front pads are hard to get but eBay has a few versions for around £35.

Yeah, that's... bad. even if he didn't use the car at all and it was sitting still it should not get to this level of crumbling damage... Have you tried to hear directly with MG (or change dealer?)

New disks required urgently MGster. Why has the surface degenerated so badly?

If it was an issue caused by the lack of braking, it should look like this:

in MGster case it looks like pieces of disk actually crumbed out creating gaps on the surface which is much more dangerous and concerning. And like Dbedford said probably a production issue with poor quality check.

Cracking of the discs is not uncommon in itself, but it's usually the fronts that get it. It's due to heavy braking in wet weather, the discs heat up and get shock cooled by water.
It is rare on the rears as they don't get as hot, unless they are binding.
