MG4 Undertray dip/bulge

I took a look under my 1 month old Trophy yesterday and whilst the majority of the under tray looks flat with no bulges, the rear panel has two dips between the fixings on the edge. This in effect creates an air duct (gaps facing the front of the car) which to my mind will just collect and trap air potentially creating a parachute effect as you drive. So then impact on the cars m/kw/h performance.Pic below, thoughts please ...

Trawling through this thread it appears it needs to be replaced. Has anyone tried to fix theirs themselves ?

It looks like many other MG4 cars to me and MG dealers have said to myself and many others already nothing is to be done about it as MG say it is not in any way unsafe have a read of the 29 pages with pictures in this thread and others, it’s been going on since the very first ones where collected from dealers ours included but I’m surprised that the latest cars still have the issues with this plus doors locking and oil leaks to name a few issues.

Yes @Les burrows , had a read through but whilst this is no way presents a safety issue, the issues the under tray dip / bulge / gaps does create with the car is with regard to the aerodynamic specifications and performance of the car.
As Jon0881 has had his replaced under warranty, that sets the precedence which now must be followed. Thanks @jon0881 which dealer did you use ?

Yes @Les burrows , had a read through but yet again, MG customer service is appalling, they appear to be behaving like a private seller .... 'sold as seen'. Southport MG. The new one whilst a different shade of black fits perfect. It’s clearly a defect and should be in their own interest to protect the motor. Sloppy finish on some things and the software but still an amazing car. I had the MG3 for the day and couldn’t wait to get back in the 4

Well I agree if one has had a replacement under warranty then we should all be able to get one but will the de ax let’s do it.
I replacement in in pages and 584 post on this thread alone says probably not to me like my dealer as told me.

Exactly. If someone can get the tray replaced then it should be a straightforward thing to do. What a shame that some dealerships are trying to get around this issue.

For some replace with most

I have just discovered that I have the problem too - I glanced underneath when I picked the car up, but I didn't know what I was looking for. Now I do know, I crawled underneath for a good look. Then crawled underneath again with a camera.

Can people who have had this issue advise me how to proceed? (I also have an audible aircon compressor, although I wouldn't call it especially loud.)

Also, if you search through relevant threads you will see others who have had these issues resolved under warranty. Would be useful to convey that information to your dealer as they may, just may, try and fob you off.

Either way, it shows the panels are defective and need replacing. The person who had his replaced stated the fitting of the one is far better.

Would you say your dip is worse than mine? To me they look about the same on the photos.
I'd say thats very normal, I had the same after 500 miles, but thats as far as it sags, 8500 miles in and its not caused any issues todate - i did check the car with a thermal image camera after a long drive, there were no real heat hotspots, that i was worried about - ill see if i can find the images as this was a fair while ago now.

Back to third year medicine lectures. Remember, students, that "normal" is not the same as "healthy". It is normal for month-old calves to cough. It is not healthy for month-old calves to cough. (Calf pneumonia is so common that many farmers think the cough is a normal thing.)

To be fair, we don't know that the warping in the undertray has a negative effect. There's lots of speculation around aero drag, dirt collecting etc... but that's not proof. I don't recall any reports of something bad happening as a result.

True, but do we want to wait until it does and then be told "you should have said something sooner"? MG have accepted this is something they should be addressing in respect of a fair number of cars, so I can't see a downside to bringing up the issue.

They may well be crossing their fingers and hoping that most customers won't notice and nothing too serious will happen as a result, but I don't want to have to rely on MG's crossed fingers.

I see what you are saying, however, this defect, and it is a defect, has been quickly identified by forum members and we are looking to have it resolved before any damage or ill effects occur. As Rolfe says, ignoring it and waiting for damage or an ill effect is not something I am prepared to do with a new car.

They're keeping their fingers crossed in respect to reduced oil level being ok in the gearbox so I don't think they are going to lose any sleep about a slight dip in the undertrays.

They aren't losing sleep over it because most people with the cars haven't noticed, but they are fixing it on those cars whose owners have noticed. Those of us who have noticed would be a bit daft to aid and abet them in this.

This isn't a new issue, it was reported on the earliest cars. In eight months since I can't find reports of it causing another problem. They warp a bit and that's it.

MG have said and it has been confirmed on the podcast by Miles that they are not going to fix this as a policy because it has not safety or other significant implications. Some people have had replacements but I don't think many and mainly early on before there was a policy. I am not saying don't try but your dealer may not know the policy if you are the first to ask. Good luck though.

This is the first car I have had that has had a flat floor, I've had 30+ years of motoring without it and never complained that my previous cars were not aerodynamic enough underneath. Now the car has a flat floor, people insist it must be completely flat even though cars haven't been like this before (brand new ask) and you can't even see it unless you peer under the car to look.

I do get it, everyone wants their new shiny purchase to be perfect. But my view is it makes no practical difference so a bigger fuss is being made than is warranted.
