Hi
I've been an ev driver for 3 years using public rapid chargers ocasionally on long trips
Recently on instavolt it accepted my card & asked if I was ok with £45 deposit to which I pressed yes & was then instructed to swipe or wave my card.
After nothing had happened for a minute or 2 I started again with the same result.
I changed to the next charger with the same result after which I was successful with another card.
Later at Macdonalds my card was accepted but I had to enter my pin.
So presumably if your bank wants your pin at most chargers there is no means of entering it.
Ok so download yet another app!!

There's a chain down which your contactless details must travel, if a node in that chain fails then a transaction will fail it's usually temporary. Could have been instavolt's server, or the bank or another link but if the payment was accepted at the terminal it won't be the charger.

Had the same problem myself . Ordered an RFID card off Instavolt no problem since
Use the free Electroverse card, one card, one app, for many many chargers including Instavolt now (and discounts if an Octopus customer). :)

It could also be your bank wanting a pin number... this has happened a couple of times for me and I've sorted it by buying a coffee and using the keypad to reset the pin counter.
Totally agree, and with no way of knowing if this is the case. Some feedback from the charger would be nice, such as 'card contactless limit reached' !! Always worth trying another card if you have one as you'd be unlucky to have 2 cards needing a pin at the same time.

I opened a Chase account, mainly for the1% cashback on card spending. They also send you a message to say when you'll have to use your pin next time. I think it's every £300.

Same here and indeed they do, however most don't. I also prefer the 5% discount using the Electroverse card rather than the 1% Chase cashback. :)

So long as you are an Octopus customer.
Surely that applies to the Electroverse part rather than the linked Chase account part. So if you don't have Octopus then you (should) never get the 5% discount anyway.

That said, when I last used the Ionity chargers at Gretna Green I used my Electroverse card for the transaction ... this gave me a discount (5p per kWh?) versus the standard cost; and I'm not with Octopus. 🤷‍♂️

From Octopus's website:

The rates reflected on the Electroverse network are provided by the charge point operators, and where possible, we add exclusive discounts! We also never charge any subscription or transaction fees. This means a low-cost and convenient public charging service for you.
The latest pricing for every network and each specific charging point is displayed in the Electroverse app.
Good to know: Occasionally, rates might differ when charging with CPOs directly. The rate you see in the Electroverse app is the rate you will be charged.

And:
Octopus Go customers receive a 5% discount off all public charging through Electroverse
Intelligent Octopus Go customers receive an 8% discount off all public charging through Electroverse

It looks like some operators give you a discount if you use the Elecroverse card even if you aren't an Octopus customer.

And I get a 15% discount with a Bonnet Boost . For my local charge point 45p kWh whereas it's 64p kWh with Electroverse , and I'm an Octopus customer ( not Go though ). Needless to say I haven't used my Electroverse card for a while :)

I had trouble with my card and I know that from time to time it needs to go in a card reader so that the pin can get verified

However my son told me to use Apple Pay on my phone as it never requires a pin

Never had a problem since !

Google pay usually works the same ... but there comes a time when contactless stops working via phone. (I think it's when the number and/or value of transactions in a day exceed a certain amount. I usually encounter this when out on a session with my brother, as I usually pay via phone/card and then he bank transfers his share the next day).

Interesting, I have never encountered a problem when using Google Pay instead of the card. I will look out for it but not so far.

As I said, I think it's just number of successive payments/totalled amount that triggers this. When we've had boys days out I've encountered this every time after a number of rounds of drinks. (I don't recall the trigger point - my thought processes are somewhat impaired by then). 😁

I use Apple Pay and it always works (FaceID authentication). Sadly, many chargers don't support it directly on their apps, but if I am to use contactless, I always use it.

Whether or not you get a decline periodically depends on your bank. I stopped using Nationwide as they frequently block it but some other banks don't.

Not entirely true. There's a couple of EV Point chargers near me in Nth Wales. Price on Electroverse is £0.62 and via the EV Point app or contactless on the charger is £0.55. I got the Electroverse card for the discounts and was quite annoyed when they charged me more that the operator.

I touched on this some months ago . My local Connected Kerb was 50p and 53p with Electroverse which I could live with . Then Electroverse put it up to 64p even though Connected Kerb remained at 50p ,which I couldn't live with . Upon querying it with Electroverse,I had the same bog standard answer as the post before . Even more curious is that some of the other Connected Kerb posts in the same council run car parks are showing as 53p with Electroverse. Makes no sense at all
