Before You Buy a New MGZS EV

I was told that the door locks and steering racks were pretty much identical across all MG ZS shipped to the UK, so that would suggest it's not luck but more 'when' the parts are likely to fail. The rear seats as another example, if you fold them down and look at the mechanism it is really poorly made andI would also be surprised that most people would not eventually have them break like mine did, and In 12 months I must have only folded them down a few times.

Mine was the knocking noise which you could also 'feel' at times. They replaced whatever it was needed replacing...but then the replaced one had the same issue within about 4 weeks.
I feel that the problem has never really been fully been investigated and any improvements made to the original components.
Therefore the parts are just replaced on a like for like basis.
All car manufacturers always have at least two suppliers of most components that they can call on, in the time of shortages.
If the parts replaced are coming from the same supplier as the items being removed, then it is very likely that the problem will return again.
It’s almost like a crap shoot if you get a good or bad item.
This issue is a well documented issue on the ZS by now and has been so since before 2019.
As the ZS in its present format, is likely to replaced early in 2025.
Then totally resolving this problem at this late stage in the model life cycle, is clearly not going to happen now.
It is more cost effect to just keep replacing the faulty parts, this will consume the remaining stock of spare parts.
Hopefully the same system does not transfer across to the new model 🤞.

I had the idea that the gen 1 has a different rear seat mounting than the gen 2, with the gen 2 the entire rear seat can easily be removed if I remember correctly.

Hopefully you didn’t have it on finance and it cost you interest to add to the pain. Did you look at leasing at the time of purchasing? I think EVs will drop in value more than ICE as EVs are going to get a lot cheaper of the next few years.
No ‘luckily’ I didn’t need finance , I don’t like leasing as I like to use my last car as the deposit. Yes evs are dropping in value a lot more had I known that I certainly would never have brought a new one.

My seat came away form the mounting bracket it was very clear that this wasn’t by design 😂

Hopefully your replacement is reliable and cheap to make up for a bad year!

🤔not good I never heard about that, have you got a picture of the problem ? And is it fixet easely ?
No pictures, the fixing came away from the seat the first I noticed was when I folded the seat down I noticed the bottom of the chair when folded flat was lifting up.

TBH - I don’t recall many people having the steering rack assembly replaced ?.
The steering rack itself is a Bosch made product.
The problem customers are seeing tends to be in steering column assembly itself.
Not sure if this is a Bosch product or a third party supplied part though ?.
The issues that customers are presenting with, usually falls into two groups.
Either they complain of experiencing a vague feeling in the steering and constantly having to make manually corrections, to keep the car on the straight path down the road, and a knocking noise from the lower part of the column.
This has been found to be excess play in one of the universal joints ( usually the lower one).
This CAN be replaced without changing the whole column assembly.
The second and more common issue is a “ticking” noise being present and felt through the steering wheel when turning or when travelling over a broken tarmac surface.
This has been resolved ( in some situations ) by check tightening the upper column bolts and the pinch bolt for the drivers manual adjust lever.
If this fails to cure the issue, then the complete inner and outer steering column assembly is replaced.
My first and second ZS EV had / has the second

I’ve had the following replaced in my 2022 in my local dealer.

clicking noise from steering wheel

Fit steering column intermediate shaft
X G11099271 SHAFT ASM-INTER STRG

Since having it done I’m experiencing what’s been mentioned above that vague feeling, any idea what it could be? I feel I’m kinda correcting or the car just feels a bit vague on the road. The clicking noise is now gone.

I thought it was the bolts at the top of the dash that are loose and by changing the rack they tighten these on installing a new one. There’s a bolt under the scuttle tray too. Do a search as there’s pictures on a thread and lots of users have reported tightening these 3 bolts solves the issue.

As we don’t have any images to accompany the part numbers, it’s hard to be certain what exactly has been replaced on your car unfortunately.
Therefore it is difficult to know the source of the vagueness that you are experiencing.
Only to say, that the steering rack assembly is attached to the upper steering column, by means of solid steel shaft, that has a universal joint fitted at each end of this shaft.
It is a once piece assembly in normal cases.
The UJ’s are required because the centre line of the steering rack and steering column are off set to each other.
This shaft is the intermediate link between both components.
When owners have complained about play or vagueness felt at the steering wheel, the intermediate shaft that houses the UJ’s are the first item to be checked.
There images on the site that clearly show the cups that house the needle roller bearings, in the UJ failing.
Another symptom is that the steering wheel is no longer in the straight ahead position when travelling along a straight road, It can be slightly off centre and the driver is making more corrections to the steering wheel in order to keep the car on right track.

Sounds like you liked the car but had a run of bad luck with faults coupled with poor dealer service so sold the car. Your gripe is how much money you lost but you got a fair price really considering you can get a new one for £26k. You overpaid hence suffered a big loss.
I paid the going rate at the time..had I had a crystal ball I’d have been able to predict that the ev market was going to crash a year later. Someone I work with brought a brand new BMW IX, they paid £125k in total…BMW now selling that car (same spec) for £82k and used one going for a lot less.

I bought mine last year for less. The more expensive the car the more it will drop. I think it has further to drop as cheaper EVs come to the market.
