Headlight bulbs

This video with info on upgrading your headlights on an MG5 might be of help to someone.

Interesting read about the bulbs, thinking of buying MG5EV but read the light was Dim when night time driving, this worried me as need a good light, does it mean I can just buy better bulbs and replace?

I find the standard headlights fine, they are far better than my previous Skoda. I believe the MG ZS has poor lights, not the MG5. I wouldn't fit LED bulbs as they are illegal and can dazzle other drivers. One of the issues is the size of the light source being larger than the thin wire element of a halogen bulb. You could legally fit upgraded halogen bulbs such as Osram Night breakers, but I would drive the car at night 1st, as you may well (like me) find they're fine!

Thank you for your reply, this is a helpful place for my questions

Just about to order some Osram bulb and was checking how to fit. Looks straight forward but I only found one main bulb each side as it looks like main beam just moves a bit of plastic out of the way of the dipped bulb?

Yes the dip beam is just the shuttered main beam.

I watched a video on how to change the bulbs last night and the guy said that the Osram only lasts a season. If I am going to pay £30+ for a pair then I would like them to last as long as the original bulbs?

What's "a season"? They guy might be a night-shift worker ;). Seriously tho', if the "night-breakers" are 100% more powerful, then they might have half the life, but TBH I've rarely ever had to replace a standard lamp that failed, so I don't think you'd be popping them out every six months. Apparently the typical longevity of a halogen based headlight bulb is between 450 and 1,000 hours, so even at an hour's use a day, that's c. 18-36 month's worth. There are some that are branded "long life" with marginally higher outputs, too....

We’ve had nightbreakers in our leaf for 4 years and both are still ok…….well they were until I just stated that! Not a high proportion of night driving but auto lights are on a lot in winter late afternoon. Make sure you don’t handle the glass with bare fingers as I’m sure you know. The people that get short life may have been careless like this.

Anyone upgraded the interior lights?
Photo not the most flattering to the original lightning.
I did change both bulbs and will see if any errors or drainage occurs.
I'll have a look when it's dark as well as i like the blueish better than candle light orange.

Great !.
I was just having trouble understanding why you thought by the installing the LED lamps in the interior light, how this would produce a condition where it produced a range reduction on your HV pack, that’s all ????.
The low powered LED lights 💡 consume their power from your 12 volt battery, that is located under the bonnet.
This 12 volt battery then in turn, receives it’s charge from the HV / traction battery located under the car WHEN the car is in the fully booted condition or when the car is placed on charge.
IF ! - anything was left switched on that could pull power from the 12 volt system, it would be this 12 volts battery that would be drained first and not your HV pack.
Let’s say for some weird reason, you had the car fully booted in the ready condition and the door was left open, then the interior lights would be consuming power from the 12 volt battery, correct.
But then this drain would then be having that loss of 12 volt power replaced, by the power in the traction battery.
This would see power / range then reduced from the HV / traction battery of course.
BUT - It would take years before that could resulted in the 12 volt battery becoming flat !.
So, unlikely it’s never going to happen 😊.
However, leaving the interior lights switched on over night, will drain the 12 volt battery because the car is powered down and is not receiving any replacement charge from the traction battery.
Sorry, very long winded I know.
But does ANY of this make any sense at all ☹️.
This is why ZS EV owners recommend that if you are sitting in the car with 12 volt electrics running, radio etc.
Then keep the car in the full booted “Ready” condition !.
Otherwise you run the risk of flattening the 12 volt battery and then it will NOT have enough power to boot up the car !.
Now, I hope what I have said above 👆 makes more sense.
A lot of ZS EV owners ( like myself ) carry a small booster pack for insurance purposes.
All this “Information” overload for the sake of two LED interior light lamps.
Bet your wishing you had never asked now !.
