How do I know its charging on the granny charger - just says connecting.. :( SOLVED! :)

Thanks for all the replies to-date folks.. they are much appreciated.

So the car went back to the dealership today... they've been pretty responsive and have given me a ZS courtesy EV whilst i'm waiting.

One thing I do know is that this ZS EV does charge on the granny charger at my home so that rules out anything this end...

Just waiting on the call from dealership now...

It’s interesting that you have a hybrid and get an EV courtesy car - some who have EV’s have been supplied ice cars to use while their car is repaired. 🧐

Hi
now you know the loan car is charging at home, must be the charger that came with your car or the fuse for the onboard charger or the onboard charger in the car. Your new car would have been full charged up for you to pick up so it did work for that. Did they try a different granny charger before keeping your car?

I'm gonna say no they probably didn't.. but i'm not gonna fuss about that... they've responded well to the issue so far.. For me I don't mind so much if there's a problem...its how its dealt with that truly matters. And so far these folks have been pretty good... They've been very prompt to respond, reassuring and have kept me informed.

Just had a call left on voice mail: MG advise order n replace the charging port.... hopefully will get it back tomorrow if that works.

The behaviour that caught me out was that HS only starts charge if
  • car is unlocked
  • charged is powered
  • the type 2 is then plugged in
  • then locked (it should auto lock)

If it doesn't lock the cable correctly and you keep hearing it trying to lock it, pull it out and push it back in.

Its currently still with the MG dealership.... They have acknowledged that that its not functioning properly and have diagnosed it as a fault with the charger port not sitting properly to form a proper locked state.

Will report back once I hear more... and hopefully get it back soon.

Finally got my car back... The dealership changed out the charging port... and it charges fine on my granny charger - Which it looks as though they also gave me a new one... ! Hurrah!!

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions

I just checked this because I wanted to know.

If my car is charging with the doors unlocked , and I open the doors it just keeps charging and the screen shows charging info.

Just so u guys know.

no it doesnt,.. it just keeps charging

why would it stop charging ? its not getting a signal from the key fob to stop charging.

Will stop charging

Normally i don't charge at this percentage,.... but to proof someone wrong,... no problem.

1) doors unlocked , driver door opened and plugged in. (Driver door left OPEN after this step)

so,.. why are u saying it stops charging ?

On my next charge I will try this to see, only going by what the book says. I know the EV had a software update so they could charge with out locking the doors but do not know if pass on to PHEV.

I just showed u.....

Thanks
I can see your car will charge with not locking the doors but you are a different marke, left hand drive so may not be the same here, it’s like in Taiwan they have a app for your phone which communicate with the car called I Smart same car but do not have it outside Taiwan, if you not looked at the video on I Smart have a look, it would be nice to have that.

Hi, my HS charges regardless of the car being locked or not. I had problems initially, looked like the charger was not fitting in properly, possible because the main charging part of the cable was not resting on the ground, and maybe the weight of that was pulling the charger a bit not allowing it to fit in properly. Changed the place to plug in the socket, got everything closer, and now it charges on the first go, no problem!

Interesting, I’m pretty sure with UK PHEV that you need to lock the car in order for the charge to be accepted. If left unlock the charge socket wouldn’t lock and it just says connecting. If I unlock the car will also unlock the charge socket and the car will stop charging.

I was trying to do an experiment whether I can sit inside the car and lock the doors from inside if the car will still charge, I didn’t finish the experiment as I got called away.
My car the same was charging perfectly off the granny charger then after 4 months or so gradually took less and less of a charge until mid August it stopped taking a charge on the granny charger. Took to the garage at first thought battery might need a slow charge to rebalance cells as I also use a fast charger. Transpires on board charger has died. That was two weeks ago hoping for new charger next week as I’m away towing a caravan and the car is very good if I have full battery to start with. In mean time have managed to get 24 miles of charge by driving on maintaining high battery charge for the last 50 or so miles. That method doesn’t need the onboard charger but does use more petrol.
