MG5 KERS 3 & Brake Light Operation - Safety Recall?

Booked mine in at a little place in Chorley. Needed a Saturday though so its a couple of weeks out (mid december). Just a thought @MilesperkWh - will that be at the new premises by then?

Received my letter last night and booked in for 8.30 am tomorrow. They said I also needed a media screen update so they'll do that at the same time. I noticed the new LR has the Pilot pack. Can my 12 month old MG5 be updated to this pack?

No - the SR doesn't have the radar unit (mounted in centre of front lower grill) or the camera (mounted in windscreen) - along with the extra buttons on the cruise control stalk.

Couldn't say, all they said on the phone was that the rails need an inspection so they'll do it at the same time.
There is a recall for the rails but I thought that was just to pop a sticker in the manual saying 35kg?

Hi
Just received my recall letter
(Photo below of letter)
Booked in for the 2/12/21
They said it should take around 30mins (we will see 😂)
I had one of those letters. Booked it in at the dealers - estimated to take 4 hours. "You'll need a courtesy car unless you want to sit here for that long..."

As you say, we will see.

Thanks for the response. That sorts that out. TBH I thought if it was a free upgrade why not but I've never had it so not going to miss it. I've been quoted 30 mins for my brake update so I'll see tomorrow. Rarely use KERS 3 anyway.

Just tried it out not scientific but here you go
  • Only in KERS 3
  • Lift off and short pause for g to build then stays on as you slowdown to fast walking pace or touch the throttle.
  • Will activate at fairly low speeds like when slowing from above 25/30 ish mph. Obviously when slower (below 25/30 ish MPH the G is not enough to trigger the brake light

It's interesting in itself that the brake light is driven by software and not hardwired.

It's most likely hardwired, with light bulb monitoring that most cars have, it would easy for the ecu to to send power to the light bulb - if kers3 is on and regen is detected over a certain ampage.

Dropped my car off at the dealer this morning for some warranty related work and got some very interesting news.
On the work schedule there was an additional item for a KERS 3 Brake Light Operation safety update.
This was actually described to me as a safety recall with letters to owners due to go out in a few days time.
Seems like MG have been listening after all.
I needed a software update on my phone/infotainment system & have taken it in twice yet MG Minstergate haven't been able to do it because of MG server issues. They say it's up then crashes so told me to hand on till they spoke to MG.
Now I've received the recall letter so phoned them after only to be told they still have the same issue so cannot guarantee it...phone the the MG Customer Service number and after 1 min of ringing I was told no one free & to ring back!
As anyone else had their dealer have this issue??

I had a chat with my dealer a couple of days ago. They were unimpressed with the service they get from MG(UK) too but they are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

As expected recall received this morning.

Just for the record: I live in Ireland and I got this recall letter this morning.

'Shrink Proof' above mentioned 4 hrs for the upgrade? Sounds a bit excessive, no?

The shortest quote I've seen was 30 minutes IIRC.
Probably a ploy to discourage the owner from hanging around.

It'll be nice when MG joins the big boys and can manage OTA updates.

My car was in for a fix (for a month ! ) and they have done the software update for the brakes so hope its working now.

Just been for mine and they couldn’t do it!
Something about being on the system for the recall but their diagnostics scan saying nothing needs to be done as all green ticks.
Dealer is liaising with MG UK for an answer
