Good evening all,
We are due to collect our brand new MG5 LR tomorrow 19/01/22 from the dealer. This afternoon we received an email requesting full payment of the balance due before we collect the car tomorrow. We have had no previous advice from the dealer that they would need payment prior to collection. Is this normal procedure?
We paid our deposit on ordering the car but feel we should be able to check the car condition before paying the full balance...is this an unreasonable request from us?..
Any advice would be much appreciated

I would want to see the car and check A it is all ok and B that it is what was ordered and has all the extras fitted correctly.

We paid for our MG5LR before collecting. I can totally understand the reluctance to do this though - but since I've never bought a new car before I had no idea if this was standard practice or not.

I'd say with most things you buy you pay before you get the product. If there's anything missing or wrong it would be sorted after you drive it away or you leave and pick it up when they fix it. Or just say I'll pay when I see it and wait until you're happy the funds have cleared. The problem is they have to register it in your name don't they, and they wouldn't do that until you've paid for obvious reasons.

If you're still not happy drove there, look at the car, go away for a day whilst they register and your funds clear and then go and pick it up.

When i researched this in readiness for the big day, I found that daily card limit on the account holding the money was something like £10k so it had to be done over more than one day.

In fact I also checked with the dealer that card payments were acceptable, as I thought cheques may take a day to clear.

What with the subsequent delay in my car, they had my money for more than a week, but in the scheme of things that wasn't a problem.

Hope your collection goes well.

With my previous car (which was my first new car) I paid in full before I actually saw the car I was getting, but on the day in the dealer.
With my MG5 it was a bit different as I only went for a test drive and to see what they’d offer for my Dacia. I ended up driving the demonstrator (which had just 22miles on the clock) home an hour or so later after agreeing a deal. So I had to pay on the day

I didn't pay until after I'd inspected the car thoroughly.
It was a simple debit card transaction that went through immediately.
I'd already contacted my bank to tell them an unusually large transaction was about to take place but they weren't actually interested!

All cars I've ever bought, new or second hand, I always paid the full amount, or the deposit if credit, on the day with my debit card.
I would ignore the email and act as if you didn't receive it. ;)

Look at it from the other perspective. If you were selling a car would you allow the buyer to drive off before the funds have cleared or the cash is in your hands!?

Hi
I paid for mine in full
But I had seen and sat in my car before hand
So at least I knew mine was there 😂
Just ask to see the car before you make a payment
Just to make sure it is on site and all is good and what you expect
Even if it’s raining ask for it to be pulled into the valeting bay and be leathered off so you can check it
I used to be a Valeter and this was a common occurrence on wet days
Good luck
😃👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
