Terrible default Tyres

Yes it is a problem with cars with loads of torque but these do spin rather easily so I suspect SdamMGEV and others are on the money in replacing the tyres. I will replace with something else when they are ready though, not before, as it's keeping my hooligan tendencies in check a bit LOL.

It's not all about being a hooligan, if you need to brake at 60 or 70 mph on a wet motorway do you trust them?

I've never been keen on Bridgestone tyres they were all I could get for my 2wd Ranger as they were a weird size. I think they were called Bridgestone Teflon's 😄 I joined the A120 at Stansted backwards once, 😱. When I test drove the 5 I gave it the beans and thought they were fine though. But that might be because I made the mistake of fitting six Chinese skidulikes to my tipper. That thing now drifts on almost every corner.

It's all proportionate to the length of your journeys, the road temperatures and the conditions you expect to be driving in. In my experience the Ecopia tyres were ok in dry warmer conditions but the wetter and colder it got they proved to be below the grip standard I would expect. That's why I changed my front tyres to the Pirelli all season SF2's. The level of traction was greatly improved. For some people the Ecopia tyres will be fine for the driving mileage/conditions they do. I will rotate the rear Ecopias onto the front in spring with a view to replacing them before next winter. They just aren't good enough for me though.

I fitted winter wheels a few years back when my daughter was due to be born around February time - needed to make sure I could get to the hospital. After that, I stuck with them (alternating with summer wheels) as I drove to work before 6am each day. Now, I WFH and so I've compromised on all season tyres but my driving style is pretty sedate so could have kept the original tyres on and I'm sure they'd have been fine for most of the year.

I trust ABS to take up the slack.
By all means use the Ecopia tyres if there suitable for you, But don't think vehicle systems will save you for breaking. ABS just keeps the peak friction available. The peak friction is dependant on the type. I won't even talk about hydroplaning.

TBH, I've never been in a situation where I had to brake hard on a motorway, I drive according to the conditions and have never had cause to in 48 years of driving.
When I learned to drive, all tyres were rubbish and we had no safety systems in cars apart from seat belts, which were not compulsory to wear.

I have. A van in front shed a ladder from the roof at 70mph. Sometimes the unexpected happens & situations such as a ladder bouncing in the middle lane can’t be anticipated.

Thankfully these types of situations are rare.

Did I mention I have a guardian angel ? :giggle:
And one of these on my car key ring:

Tyre choice at production on most new vehicles is almost certainly going to be driven by the attractiveness of the deal offered by the tyre manufacturer rather than outright tyre performance.
I haven't yet driven my car hard enough to find any significant shortcomings but I don't doubt they are there.

So the garage couldn’t source the A005 Bridgestone and offered me 2021 vredestein Quatrac tyres instead
Rates C for economy but excellent grip in dry and wet.

Completely transformed the handling of the MG5, much more neutral turn in and almost zero slip in the wintery roads up here in NE Scotland. So much more confidence inducing. I’m impressed, so if you are after excellent handling all weather tyres, this is a good choice.
Economy wise, not seen much drop in miles/kWh reading, maybe 0.1 of a difference.

Hi all I have recently had another read of this thread as when my MG5 had its first service a few weeks back, the report pointed out that my front tyres where about 50% worn.
I decided maybe better start looking into what to get as replacements the car is fitted with the Bridgestone Ecopia tyres that came with the car but my local tyre centres say that these are not available like for like here in the UK.
So what do I go for not sure is the answer, read lots of reviews on tyres over many years and one of the best is one done but Which magazine, this they tend to do every 18/24 months but today as we are see more EVs come to our roads I have written to the consumers association to request them to test tyres that are available and suitable for EVs and to publish there findings and I got a positive reply from them ( see below) so I hope they will look at this very aspect of EV ownership soon.

Found this recent review from my favourite tyre review site

Biffo, thank you very much for that last post very good, yeh the continentals do Seem to fair very well I had that make of tyre on my last car and they where great even if a little expensive.

So after changing my tyres to the continental I now cannot spin the wheels at say 10mph or above and from stop it only wheel spins for a tiny split second. Much more stable in general and it's wet out there today.

Also it's strange but the squeak when reversing has also gone, not sure how but didn't happen today and it always used to.

So ye I highly recommend them
Hi Adam this I fine very interesting I mean the squealing in reverse, I have had this issue from the car being a few weeks old but strange thing is when I just touch the brake even when the car is still rolling backwards slowly it stops, been back to the dealer 4 times now but still there last time they said all EVs have this issue but maybe your right it might be the tyres and not the brakes dam annoying at times all the same. Never had this problem on any of my cars in the past.

Yes I don't know what they did when I got new tyres but I've o ly heard it maybe twice since changing them and before that without fail it would make that noise. I also have forgot about wheel spin. I did annoyingly get a massive nail in one of my new continental tyres so had to buy yet another one :-(

But Tinting the windows and new tyres were my best buy for mine.

I always, always go for all-seasons tyres, aka mud+snow, for which my tyre of choice at the moment would be Michelin Cross Climate 2 (not +) Goodyear Gen tyres also look good. Loads of reviews esp on YouTube. I don't have my MG yet, but the last thing I want to do is drive on Primacys (summers) for 2 or 3 years.
