Think we have been hacked.....

Thanks, everyone, for your input.
It’s a testament to the nature of this forum’s members that, until now, there hasn’t really been a significant need for the appointment of any moderators and it’s just been myself dealing with duplicate posts (happening so often that I think there is a technical issue) or threads in the wrong forum.
That’s changing, now.

Based on what we have at AVForums, I am going to create a moderators forum, guidelines and resources and I am inviting members who want to help moderate MGEVs to contact me by private conversation.
Moderating a forum is a significant undertaking and is a volunteer position that carries with it a responsibility to the community. It will help if volunteers have previous experience moderating a Xenforo forum. If you’re up for the job, please get in touch.
I think this unpleasant incident will result in the evolution of this forum in to something better.
Thank you all for your support and apologies again for the horrible images posted by one, sick individual.

Think it would be appropriate to have more than 1 moderator? No?

Sorry just gone over a page, my bad 🤨

thanks @Stuart Wright I now see you're on the case 👍

That is what has been offered above

I started a Conversation directly with Stuart at 5:41 on the basis that he would get pinged that a message was waiting. He, like all of us have other activities and it was dealt with reasonably promptly. I presume using the Report button would have a similar effect.

Yeah, your message crossed mine - you were probably typing same time as my apology being composed. I saw the next page of the thread after I'd posted and admitted my error immediately I noticed it.

Thanks for putting me right though. 😕

He’s back, seen and reported posts on two threads so far…

He's made 27 posts. I imagine all of them are similar.

I've put my hand up as an additional moderator. I'm 10 hours ahead of GMT, so that would help with for example today's efforts which have been up for hours.

Edit: with this pest, probably no need to report more than one or two. Once moderators are aware of the problem, it's presumably a quick job to delete the user and all his posts in a few clicks.

Good for you Coulomb. I already moderate a few sites and was tempted to volunteer for this one too but it already takes too much of my time.

I'm not sure what bans are available or what the mods can see here but on other sites I've been known to ban whole IP ranges and domains, in fact pretty much the whole of eastern Europe is barred on one site!! It's all very well being inclusive but not at that kind of price.

Also a two-step sign up process where the mod has to authenticate a user before he can post would probably help. And make the sign up foolproof for bots. We actually do a bit of research on dodgy looking account requests - quick search for the username/email address sometimes throws up some background.

It is so tedious to have to do this though, I don't get what pleasure the idiots get from it - it isn't like there is money to be made at it.

The only solution is to moderate all new members, approving their posts until confirmed genuine.

Possibly just moderate photos from new members, instead of all posts? It would take a significant amount of work away from the moderators having to look at every post which is probably not feasible, while minimising the risk of offensive content. Don't know if that's technically possible ?

Or just restrict photos for new members, either a time limit (30 days?) or post limit, before photos can be posted, which takes the burden off the mods altogether. Again don't know if that's possible.
