hi there,

MG5 LR here. Can anyone advise, if there is a way of switching the lights completely off when the car is on? I was charging in the underground car park the other day (with the infotainment on) and i wasn't able to switch the day lights off... Thanks

The third party device/application OVMS might be able to turn off the DRL on the ZS (seen a thread about this relating to camping in the car), not sure about the MG5 though. Might be more details on some of those threads. Otherwise, I don't think so - they might dim if you manually switch on the 'side lights' though.

I will try that, thanks.

It would be a nice touch if you could switch off the DRL whilst stationary but they automatically came back on if the car started moving.

Daftest thing the powers that be could have done, now motorbikes are even less visible, added to which it's only on the front and many motorists seem to rely on them in poor light conditions instead of headlights. Consequently the rear of the vehicle can be difficult to see.
Agreed. The number of cars I see running about in poor visibility conditions with no rear lights on is astonishing. How that ever got through vehicle standards I've no idea!

At least you can switch the auto headlights off. I couldn't in my last Prius, you only had Auto and parking/side lights on the switch.

I hate the auto default.
I'd be very happy with manual switching only.

I'm growing to like all the automation, though some certainly has places where it's useful and places where it's not.

The problem is that they allow the motorists to stop engaging with the driving experience, they are an additional expense on the vehicle as well as a potential cost of repairing faulty systems. You've only to see the how some folk react when a roundabout's traffic lights fail as they've obviously forgotten the rules of the road. I had one pratt brake in front of me on one such occasion to let a vehicle on to the island despite it being his right if way!
I'm all for such things as power steering, abs, syncromesh gearboxes lights and indicators. I don't need hill assist, lane assist or speed assist, and I'm certainly cable of knowing when my lights and wipers need to be turned on!
It's no wonder that the cars of today weigh as much as a small tank and need the generating capacity of a b****y power station!

OTOH you could say that taking away some of the mundane tasks which can be automated leaves the driver's mind clearer to concentrate more on his driving.

No-one needs some of the more modern driving aids but, used appropriately, they probably do a better job of managing their aspects of car safety than a person can.

Nothing wrong with progress...

You'd think so, but in my experience in the real world it's not happening. I've lost count of the number of times folk either don't signal, or signal after they've done the manoeuvre, and don't get me started on lane discipline!
I will concede automatic headlights are definitely a plus, if it stops the many lunatics I observe(just!) driving in the most appalling lighting conditions without even running lights showing.
Why do we need automatic door locks? Are the doors likely to be less liable to opening unlocked? Most vehicles are fitted with a childproof lock system which can be manually operated. Recently our Meriva has required a new rear passenger sensor at a cost of nearly£400- ridiculous!
I'm taking the view we're all being softened up for self driving cars😀

All of what you say is probably true but I find if I drive at an appropriate speed and distance and with awareness and anticipation that the situations you despair of mostly pass me by, and I arrive much less stressed... :)

The world has moved on since the Morris Minor, cars have more bits on that make them more attractive to sell and buy and easier more comfortable to drive.
Poor driver standards, like lane discipline, highway code knowledge, indicating etc. etc. has nothing to do with engaging with the driving experience, does driving an automatic take away the experience?.
TVs even have remote controls now, perhaps that is taking away from the channel changing experience, Voice controlled lights at home, oh, how I miss jumping up to operate the switch to turn it on experience. ALEXA where are you....
:)

I must admit i can keep completely calm when seeing other drivers making a fist of it even if they are right in front of me. Over 45 years ago whilst on many iffy plane journeys to far away places I learned if your not driving it, don’t worry about because there is nothing you can do about it anyway. I only use the horn to let other people know I am there, never at another motorist who has made a mistake, which we all do from time to time. And as for the racer boys I don‘t even smile now.
I think a lot of lane and signal errors are because drivers are concentrating on sat nav instructions whether verbally of visually. Also they do get used to other aids and when they are not using them get caught out. One thing I am seeing a lot more is undertaking particularly at multi lane junctions and roundabout, I tend not to be invovled as I reasonably happy to be pushed back a car length as long as I avoid an accident. I never understand why so many people take chances with their and their families lives for the sake of a car length.
But in any event I love my auto headlights simple one twist to turn them off, it about the only automated item on my Excite.

Wold be Nice to have heat on and lights off on the marvel when it's dark and cold outside and you sit on a ferry for 30minutes....
