IPhones and Carplay

I‘ve had no issues at as long as you use apple cable and the correct usb port, and the phone must be unlocked. I note some one above saying they intend using android by blue tooth for calls and carplay for everything else, that can’t done carplay shuts off bluetooth when connected .

Car went in to the dealer today to let them look at the issue. They got both the Android and Apple phones working after applying update SA020 to the infotainment system (though strangely, all my presets were still there when I picked the car up from the garage) SA020 is meant to reduce lag when pressing various options, radio stations etc, and I think may fix a problem with USB ports - which seems likely given that the Android Auto and Apple Carplay both work now. Interestingly Android Auto is picked up from the left side USB port in the car. I didn't think that was happening before and I always though that the other USB was the correct one, can anyone confirm their experience? Very happy with Android Auto, now use it for phone calls too as well as maps and other features. Massive improvement over the base MG display and infotainment system. Thanks everyone who has commented, and to Jody for the cable which works. Thanks

I have a CarPlay wireless adaptor which works fine in the ZS. No issues at all. I use a iPhone 8 and the other half uses a iPhone 7 Plus, both work fine.
I am thinking of getting a wireless adapter. I have read that not every adapter will work with any car.
What adapter do you have and where did you get it ? Many thanks.

First post! I use the cplay2air unit. Works perfectl. I have them in my other cars and never had any issue with them.

Did they notice that the usb port(s) were not connected when they tried the update. And connected them, albeit the wrong way round

Having had so many problems with the USB connection of various Android phones for Android Auto I have read several commentators who have said that the interface is flaky and highly dependent on the model of the phone connected. There also seems to be a problem whereby Android phones will disconnect when they reach full charge via the USB and then no Android Auto is available. As I have previously said, I have the car in at the dealer on 4th October as they say there is a software update. I am somewhat sceptical as it is a brand new ZS EV and there are so many other reports of problems from other owners with new ZS EV's. I will wait and see, but meanwhile, I think I would prefer to go down the Apple route for USB connection as there have been very few issues reported and IOS also doesn't disconnect when full charge is reached. My question is, has anyone successfully connection an Apple 8 via USB and is using Carplay without any problems? Does anyone know what is the lowest version of IOS is compatible with the MG ZS EV? Thanks if anyone can help.
Could be a silly question, but have you gone into the car play settings on the phone and set it to USB only, I had an issue with this as it was trying to set up wireless for car play but the MG doesn't support it, even with it working great it still has glitches but unplugging the cable and putting it back in normally restores it👍

Keys to successful Carplay use:

  • Use a MFI certified cable as above, or the original cable, ensuring no damage or black spots on the contacts
  • An IOS device running version 13, which received a large feature update
  • Use the right-hand USB port on the ZS
  • Pair the phone first with Bluetooth
  • Allow (empirically) the phone to connect with Bluetooth when entering the car before connecting with the cable. This will allow multiple apps to interrupt the audio over each other and not cause the unit to reset Carplay

Update from me: iPhone13, new Apple cable, CarPlay still drops out. I sat with it in the car (powered on) and CarPlay dropped in and out whilst I was looking at the phone so it looks like an MG implementation problem or possible problem with the USB port in the car which is unlikely I think as the phone showed it was still powered when CarPlay dropped out.

Do you think a wireless Apple CarPlay may be possible on the new ZS?

I've tried Android Auto a few times now and never felt it was worth the effort. In car Sat-Nav and Bluetooth music are much less effort and far more reliable.

Never once had an issue with iPhones and ZS CarPlay, it’s constantly used.
It’s infinitely better than using the inbuild car functionality.
There were a few people that had reported problems with the usb socket in the car, maybe that’s the problem.

Ditto... I even removed apps from being able to use Carplay and still the same. Perhaps old head unit software and new iOS software? I haven't had SA20 for the head unit.

I'm any case it's annoying and a minus point against MG.

In my experience, dropouts on wired Carplay is usually due to the cable or USB port being defective. I had to try about 5 different cables before I found a suitable one fro my VW and MG. Having said that, I did switch to a Carlinkit 2.0 adapter with suitable right angled adapter and have never looked back!

We have a similar issue on our Range Rover. Apparently occurs when the phone battery is below around 35% and it keeps cutting out. Maybe try charging your batter to a higher level and see if that makes a difference?

Thanks @superhans. I don't think it's the battery, I'm now leaning more towards the USB port in the car being a a bit flaky, maybe even dirty. This is something I'll look into given time!

Changed my cable for identical model but less used. Seems better for now …
