Dropping out of EV mode

I have highlighted the problem to MG Australia. They told me they'd have their experts follow up for me. The only thing I got was a call from the dealer to whom MG had obviously forwarded my complaint. After telling me he really didn't know much about these cars, the Service Manager at the the dealership wants the car back to do further tests. Go figure. It goes in January 4th. I'll let you know if any progress is made.
Hi Ivan,
Did you get any result from MG regarding kicking out of EV mode during a downhill decent? We are having the same issue with ours

Hi Paul. MG Australia did not even bother to reply to me. Instead they forwarded my complaint back to the dealer. The Dealer took the car and tested it but could not fault it. They were unable to replicate the problem. They said they'd try and replicate it with one of their demo cars and if unable then they'd send someone to my home and see exactly what happens each day with mine. That was over 2 weeks ago and I've heard nothing. The Dealer here in Adelaide (Hamilton MG) are not at all proactive and I guess I'll have to lodge a further complaint before they continue their investigation. It's a shame because in all other respects it's a lovely car.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. Bought my hs phev late last year and have noticed more recently that the ev mode drops out at the start of most trips. This is annoying when only doing a short trip but no problem on a longer drive as it's easy to put it back into ev after a km or 2 and it stays there until the electric is used up. Has anyone heard of a fix to the short distance drop out yet?

Its getting colder and your heating is kicking in. Am noticing this in Adelaide too , so have set the Climate control temp lower to 21C.

See earlier thread that I started last year. I have had and still have the same problem. It's been back to the SA dealer multiple times but they have been unable to fix it. Don't think they care. I raised it with MG Australia; they didn't get back to me just forwarded my complaint to the Dealer who looked at it again to no avail. Last they said they'd send one of their people to drive it first thing from home when the problem occurs, but they haven't followed up on this. It's a lemon and I would advise anyone against buying one.

I bought my MG PHEV September last year from MG Gold Coast and now the weather starting to get colder it's dropping out so I turn my climate control off so It runs on EV for my short trips which has success so far, and yes I know we shouldn't have to turn our comforts off to get why we brought the car in the first place.
just after first month I went to start my car in the morning and the cars 12v battery was completely dead so I got the MG emergency guy around to jump start my car all is well took it back to MG dealership they wanted to have a look and they even said there was a computer update so they will do that as well.come back two hours they said..4hrs later trying my best to stay calm all they where telling me was they couldn't do an update and the car won't start..long story short they had to change the faulty 12v battery which took one week to get battery and car back. Im learning a lot about the PHEV and trying to be patient with these problems..took the car for its 10,000 service last week told them about EV drop out and rattle behind dash when running on petrol..they didn't have any problem with EV drop out and couldn't hear any noise told me to video both problems when they happen..oh well $265 dollars later but I must admit they clean inside my car and my tires where sprayed to make them shinny..
If anyone has had rattle noise only running on petrol and it's been fix can you please let me know..thanks in advance.

  1. Dead battery is a common problem with MGs - usually replaced under warranty without issues.
  2. The failure to update the computer sounds like the firmware update failed. That is a more complex software issue and often requires MG factory assistance to resolve, according to the forums I have read.
  3. Rattle behind the dash is not an issue I have experienced. I must admit that after driving in EV mode most of the time, the petrol engine noise and vibration can take some getting used to. Can you record the sound perhaps and post on the forum ?

Yes once it gets low
That could be why your battery went, when you plug in to charge the EV battery it will also charge the 12v battery but also the EV battery keeps the charge up in the 12v battery but if the EV battery has low charge this could let the 12v get too low. As there is no alternator on the this is how the 12v charge.

Ok will look into that..

Unable to replicate issue. Even with HV battery on 0%, 12v remains charging at around 14V.

Even you see 0% there is still voltage in the EV battery but this has happened over time as your old car battery has fallen below 8 volts approximately so wold not recover. You would be able to replicate this In sort time.

Make sure you read the manual about the conditions required for EV only operation. One of them is that the Heating is not on . Only cooling.
I think the car is so advanced that most dealers dont have a clue about them! I get most of my knowlege about the quirks of the car from this forum !
I wouldnt be suprised if dealers do the same !!!
