I can't see how both can be correct
One suggests the 12v battery chargers whenever it needs to no matter what
The other says put in ready mode to charge and even disconnect battery for long periods?

I agree it's kind of confusing.
I think it's this way : "If the car is used on 12v power only (by car I mean windows, infotainment, 12v outlet, etc...), then the HV battery will charge it if needed."

But, if you lock the car and let it parked for a long period of time, then the HV will NOT charge the 12v battery if needed.

Would make sense if it was not for this bit?

Then this suggests the opposite it will charge when vehicle is off?

Yeah that's confusing.
I think some of these paragraphs are more for legal reasons and to protect MG from lawsuits if some cars are left stranded because of a low 12v battery.
Like after a DC charge 🤣
I can see it now its your fault sat in the car play with the entertainment screen or radio not in ready mode🧱

If it helps the Gen1 ZS and Short Range MG5 manuals didn't have any info regarding intelligent charging.

When the updated ZS and MG5 long range manuals were published the smart charging bit was added, without any regard for updating the old text or even referencing smart charging as an addition to the old text.

This is probably why it's confusing!

Moreover, every 6 month the 12V batter should be disconnected from the vehicle completely, and hooked up to a pulse charger for a few hours to limit or reverse battery sulfation. With this 'maintenance' the battery will last for years.

Do you think that it may be due to the person who translated the info from Chinese did not have an engineering background or both sections were translated by different people, just a thought.

On my drivers display I've heard a bong and had a message that the 12V battery is low and I should start the car to charge it so I would infer that the charging part isn't automatic. As far as I remember this is when the car is unlocked but when I was outside the car so perhaps the monitoring is automatic if the car is unlocked. This is a Mk1 ZS.

On Mk1 it isn't automatic at all, doors locked or unlocked. Again on a Mk1 the car has to be in full Ready mode to charge the 12v battery or on an AC charger. If you are on a DC (Rapid) charger then again you must switch to full Ready mode to keep the 12v from discharging if you are sat in the car using stuff like heater, lights, radio etc. On the MK2 it's different.

My Gen 1 turns off after 10 minutes if in ACC mode to preserve the 12v.

Similar on the Gen2 face lift model.
If you close down the car with the radio playing, it will continue to play the radio AFTER the car has closed down, for about 10 minutes.
Only then it shut down the info unit.
It has a built in delay feature to protect the 12 volt battery.
If you leave the car, the radio will still continue to play, until you lock the doors from the fob.
Then it shuts down the info unit.
