Never got it to work in 18 months on my mk1 zs ev. Tried different cables and phones. Works faultlessly on my new trophy lr.

I experience similar, I have got a decent cable and the method I use is click on android auto before connecting the lead, you then get the connect cable message, then I plug the usb in and press android auto again, it opens android auto, some times immediately and sometimes a lapse of 5-6 second but always connects, the correct cable is crucial, I searched Amazon foe “android auto compatible cable” and picked a short one. Thanks Jeff, just ordered one

On the settings on the mobile you can put phone to auto come on so when connect cable it works after a few secs

Strange how i have never had a problem with connecting to AA with a cable once i set the USB options on my phone from "charge only " to transfer files ( i think there is also a AA option now).
The only annoyance was i could not close the lid while the cable was plugged in , so i got the following from amazon "

USB Type C Cable, Mcdodo 90° Right Angle 3.1A Fast Charging USB C Charger Cable, (0.5m+1.2m+3m)

So i can leave the cable plugged in and close the lid. Perfect
