Last of the cheap EVs ?

With the current inflation, hence devaluation of the pound, the possible trade war with EU because of the breaking up of Bozo's Ready Made Deal (so is that now "let's Brexit get undone"?), the war in Ukraine and a collapse of public services, car prices will go up much, much more than now. We are truly in a perfect storm and it will hit fully after summer.

Everything changed in 1971 when we went decimal - the biggest cause of inflation ever seen in this country (IMHO)
Bigger even than printing gazillions of pounds and ultra-low "emergency" interest rates (at an "emergency" level for over a decade...), eh? Yeah, right.

I worked in a petrol station for a brief time in the early 70s. Remember having to out a squirt or two of some oil in a wheeled tank into motorbikes, along with the petrol? Presume two strokes or similar?
Yup, that's where I started my motoring. 75p for a gallon of petrol and a shot of oil in my trusty old Yamaha FS1E (50cc 2 stroke) ..... wish I still had it

Prices rises are one of my main concerns, while I'm looking for my first EV.
MG EVs are on my short list, and the soon-to-be-released MG4 seems to be the perfect EV for me with a good mix between ZS and MG5 specs.
However, I'm worried that it might finally be listed with a price tag more expensive than expected, and that I would miss some current good deals on either the ZS or MG5...

(by the way I'm new on this forum, so "Hi everyone! 😃")
Welcome to our forum.

You will find that prices are rocketing on everything everywhere at the moment, so a similar issue is happening with alternatives. Not helped by demand for EVs & nobody wanting diesels anymore!

Oh dear I must be old, I remember being able to get 4 gallons for £1 filling my dad's car up, although when I got my first car prices had gone up and could only get about 3 gallons for a £1.
c. 5.5p/litre and later 7.5p/litre for the younger members.
Sorry I remember the oil crisis & petrol going from 34.9 to 44.9p / gallon!

Is the outgoing MG5 the last of the 'cheap' over 200 miles EVs ?

The facelift ZS is more expensive than the Gen 1, which in turn was more expensive than the 5 to start with and I'm sure the facelift 5 will be more expensive than the Mk1 MG5, SR or LR..

I think we all know that we need more EVs that are affordable but each new one, from any manufacturer, that comes out seems to be getting more expensive instead. Perhaps they will be 'value for money' at whatever the price they put on but do we all need the spec that we have to pay for?
Do we need more of the old 'Escort L trim' type of EVs, i.e. base models ?

With the production line started for the MG4 (see link below) which looks very nice, where will that sit in the price spectrum?

Could we be sitting in a classic of the future, or indeed now, with good range, good spec, all at a price at the bottom end of the market.

interesting point classic EVs. Will there be any as who is ever going to buy an old car with firmware that won’t update and worn out batteries too expensive to replace? Maybe the era of classic cars has gone by?

Just a point of order, inflation and devaluation are two completely different things and should not be confused. :)
