HV battery shutoff when initiating rapid charge. Vehicle control system fault.

AA man tried disconnecting and waiting 10 mins for mine, even tried 15 in case 10 wasn’t enough. Shorting with a spanner didn’t work, tried a few times but he didn’t try using an OBD2.

Dealer rang me after a few days to say they plugged In and charged up and I could collect, guessing they cleared the fault. They “said” they were in contact with MG but not sure if they were just saying that. Told me not to let it get less than 30% charge, which would obviously cut the range with the reduced 80% battery top up on fast chargers.

Hoping it’s really rare and now I have full RAC relay cover between them and MG connect one of them will have an OBD2 terminal. It does leave us worried to use a fast charger or use for long journeys or important journeys.
My charge was at 49% when it happened, the AA man said the charger was to blame.

We collected our car last Sat May 7th after 15 days at the Dealers. The loan of a petrol MG was much appreciated. We were told that there is no message saying it needs a software update. They charged it successfully on a rapid charger at Ikea and on site (up to 80%). Their view is that it was caused by a faulty charger. And we had a discussion about knowing a charger is faulty in advance with info on Zap Map...but we may be the first to use a faulty charger unknowingly.
We've agreed to give it another go.
Meanwhile, how do you find out year and month of build? I've studied what I think is the 17 digit VIN and checked that on-line. It supports 2021 build but needs 19 digits to show the month. And I at last found the bar code on the parcel shelf, with lots of Chinese writing and a date stamp: 2021 11 4. So can I assume it was built on Nov 4th 2021?

You should have been given a certificate of conformity with the car which states the build date, but this is no guarantee of what version of software you have. The only way to do this is to get a dealer to plug it into their system.

This is the reply i got today from mg customer service. Its taken 4 weeks so far. Must be a lot of head scratching going on.
I can confirm that a technical case was opened by your MG Dealership and we have advised them to check the software of the car. It appears that some areas of the car have not been configured correctly, and this is being addressed.

Once that action has taken place, the dealer will complete further testing and I trust that it will not be too long before this matter is brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

That was not the case for me.

The charger where it happened for me (Peterborough Services) had two ports and people were continually charging next to my car while waiting for the AA and the two hours they were there.

We moved the car to another space to not block the charger, after he gave up, and people used the same port which had triggered the fault on mine.

I think a spike or a specific software problem encountered on on the MG side was much more likely. There was two double chargers and I even saw an MG ZSEV (mk1) like mine charging at the charger next to mine at one point. Both were fully operational, just something triggered my car when I tried to charge it. Other people were charging at the charger next to me at the time so if it was a spike they were fine.

Pilot error ?;)

There is now a bulletin to dealers, asking them to check the software on these specific ECUs prior to handover, and update if necessary:
• VCU
• EV
• CCU
• BMS
• TC

If you are worried about any potential charging issues, please ask your dealer to check/update these (particularly if you took delivery of your facelift ZS EV before May 22).

HI Miles,
Any chace you could post the current revision/version numbers for these updates (i.e. what they should be post update)?

I don't have the list of most up to date versions. Your dealer will only be able to tell by plugging in the car to the diagnostic computer and checking manually.

Sadly, that's the problem - they can't - it seems we are having to hand hold them through the entire process, hence the ask :(

Thanks Miles. That's is what I was hoping, but would have very disappointed if it wasn't after the option of OTA updates has not materialised.

I guess that includes just about everybody then Miles 🤣.
Our car is Chorley Burley supplied car and it will be going back there to ensure any check / update is carried out successfully !.
It is a 200 mile around trip and we will pass at least five other dealerships on route, but after having my previous ZS EV stranded at my local dealer for three days, it will be going to Burley !.
We collected our car on the 18th March so we are likely to be affected, although we don’t carry out any rapid charging ( if we can help it ).
