Hi all
It’s been a few weeks since my Roewe i5 fog lights arrived from Ali express
I finally got around to fitting them todayπŸ˜ƒ
Not as simple as I first thought πŸ˜‚
Here’s how I did it
1 remove MG badge with four screws
This is so I could zip tie it up so it didn’t keep opening later on

2 remove all screws from under the front bumper

3 remove screws in the wheel arch including the hidden one (second photo below)

4 remove four bolts from the top of bumper
Then remove the two hidden ones circled in green

5 disconnect wires for outside temperature sensor and charging point lock

Bumper removed
1 Zip tie the charging point door shut

2 remove the two screws from the rear of the grille insert
3 un clip the chrome piece first and remove it from the front of the bumper
4 un clip the grille and remove from rear of bumper

5 clip in the black cover from the rear of the bumper
6 clip in the chrome piece from the front of the bumper and insert the two screws remove earlier

6 as you can see from the photos below there are no fixing points for the fog lights
I used small self tapping screws for the top fixings
And small nuts and bolts for the lower ( I un clipped and removed the small black plastic piece to gain access for the nuts and bolts)

NOW TO MAKE MY MIND UP HOW I WANT TO WIRE THEM UP
SIDE LIGHTS, DIP BEAM OR HIGH BEAMπŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

I think I could probably do it in a couple of hours now I have found those hidden bolts under the bonnet πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
But honestly if you have a basic tool kit and follow what I’ve posted I think anyone could do it in a couple of hours or so
I promised myself and my wife when I got the car I wouldn’t do any modifications at all apart from a set of floor mats BUT here we go again on my 54th car
There’s a couple of more things I want to do but nothing too radical
Updates will follow as the mods (or should I call them enhancementsπŸ˜‚) are done
Thanks for your reply

Good job but with the new rules regarding vehicle changes are you allowed to do this now πŸ€”
If it is I cannot remember the last time I needed foglights - additional spot/driving lights would however be a good option given the fairly poor headlights fitted to the SR MG5

Hi
I still don’t know how I’m going to use them yet (I may just link them to the main beam)
I just thought the front bumper was lacking a little something
Cheers

Fit the stalk from the version that has these fitted from the factory (somewhere in South East Asia?) or from a ZS/HS - bribe a friendly dealer to mess with software and see if there is an option to recognise the stalk and/or lights (some creative hacking of the wiring loom might be needed here!) and run them as fully functioning fog lights?

More realistically, I've always felt that the projector lights don't give very much light at the front corners - behaving like secondary (dimming) DRL would be my choice.

Hi
Or I could bodge a switch in the dash like this guy did in the Philippines

I've done some tidying up so it's all in one thread now :)
Cheers Alb
I was going to do it in one thread but as I was getting a bit tired (up since 6am) while editing photos
I was going to do the second part today but I soldiered on and did it last night
Thanks again

Excellent work... Well done. And thank you for posting do clearly. Think you might be tempting a few people....

I don’t remember the last time we had fog bad enough for fog lights
I just think the car looks better with them
Cheers

I can't find a current succinct guide but the rules for a fog light was within 18in of the ground OR below the leading edge of the bumper whichever is lower, it will have at least been changed to metric if nothing else. There is nothing about beam pattern in the rules, its all about position.

If those rules are still valid then these can ONLY be used as fog lights and as such cannot come on with high beam, only dipped or side lights and cannot be used unless visibility is below 100m

In actual fog (not heavy rain or snow) I would never use them with the dip beam. Generally speaking fog does not sit on the ground but leaves a clear band at low level The primary reason why you can't see very far at night in fog is due to the reflection off the water droplets immediately in front of your normal headlights into your eyes drowning out any other reflections further away. Because the fog lights are low level they "look" under the fog layer and if on side lights the road can be illuminated as if there is no fog at all albeit at a slightly reduced range due to the height. The reflection is also slightly reduced because they are further away from the drivers sight line so there is still some benefit in snow. I have tried turning off dip in fog and have been astounded at the difference. The problem is rule 226 of the Highway Code states that in conditions of reduced visibility headlights must be used. The fact that they can REDUCE visibility in such circumstances is not considered.

It is fairly simple to automate the control of the light by powering the coil of the relay from the side light circuit but connect the return of the coil to the main beam circuit. With side or dip the coil earths through the main but doesn't pass anyway near enough current for them to light up but when the main beam is selected both sides of the coil are at 12v so disengages.

There is however one big caveat. You are also required by law to have an indicator to tell you the fog lights are on. On the rally car we had a green lamp on the dash surround as aesthetics were not an issue.

I have a memory of an older model Passat having pretty weak DRL in a similar position possibly other VW models too. Not sure what the various other lights are.

Done a little bit more digging:
The Highway code is in itself not law and

Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989, Reg.25,(2),(b),(ii).

ii)in seriously reduced visibility, a pair of front fog lamps which is so fitted that the outermost part of the illuminated area of each lamp in the pair is not more than 400 mm from the outer edge of the vehicle is kept lit.

Then you have to read it backwards as Para 2 essentially says that Para 1 (which says you must have headlights on) need not apply

So in seriously reduced visibility if you have front fog lights on you don't need to have headlights on.

And a tell-tale indicator lamp to show operation is only required for the rear fog lamp

Hi all
Today I decided to wire in the fog lights I fitted
I finally made my mind up and bought some small side light bulbs and wired the lights up to the dip beam
Photo below
I will take some later tonight when it gets darker
