Hi All, I have been looking for roof bars that could fit my 2020 MG5 Excite. This would require the kind of "universal" roof bars supplied with clamps that are designed for cars without rails. (e.g. Thule 754 or MontBlanc Supra)

I have checked on several websites including: montblancgroup.com , halfords.co.uk, car-roofracks.co.uk, thule.com/en-gb , roofbox.co.uk - Unfortunately, none of these websites list the MG 5 as a car which is compatible with their products.

So I wrote to [email protected] to ask why they haven't yet listed MG 5 as being compatible with their products. They said its because Thule doesn't yet think there is enough demand to either investigate whether MG 5 is compatible or make adjustments to their product range to provide something which would be compatible.

They said they would register my request as evidence of this demand and it will be passed to whoever is in authority at Thule to provide support for the MG5.

Therefore, please could you also take 2 minutes to write to [email protected] to ask for the MG5 to be added to their list of compatible products (especially the MG5 Excite)? You could also point out that 30,000 MGs were sold in the UK in 2021 alone.

Thanks so much!! Together we can hopefully get Thule and other suppliers to give proper support to the MG5!

This is the second reply I got after pointing out the first reply mentioned the 35Kg roof rail even though I put Excite model 🙄

Hi Mark

We do not have any roof rack for that car. What I recommend is that you check with MG what the allowed weight is for the car without a railing. Many car manufacturers of electric cars do not allow weight on the roof in Europe for some reason. If the allowed weight is very low we will not be producing a roof rack but MG might order one specifically made for them and sell through their dealers.

Regards Johan

Thanks for following up. Do you know who we could email in MG UK to find out if they can give any weight recommendation on the roof of the Excite... or might consider doing so after further tests?

They may twig that it is a campaign if they get half a million (well, maybe 10 if we are lucky) similar questions within a week!! I guess that doesn't matter though.

I was going to try various second hand options but found summit 104 bars from go outdoors for £42. They supposedly fit the mg5 Excite. I have some audi aero style bars that I might try modifying to work with the summit feet.

Hi Dave, please can you add a few pictures of the Summit 104 on your Excite. Thank you

Do they have them in stores or just online?
No stock in stores near me but looks like the odd place has them. Deliver to store is free though. As mentioned before I would much prefer thule but without knowing the correct fitting kit I am left guessing.

Roof rails would have been fantastic but I was already stretching the budget with the LR. Couldn't justify another £2k for rails and a few other nice to haves.

Well that was a waste. Go Outdoors have cancelled my order due to an issue with stock. Guess I am back on the hunt for something cheap that might fit.

Apologies for jumping on this late but I have Thule roof box and rails and was trying to find the clamps that would fit my MG5 exclusive rails. But I do remember @Miles Roberts CG did a review video of MG5 with a roof box on so maybe he could inform which setup was used?

I know it's not Thule but I've got the Handirack inflatable roof bars.
These came with antislip mats.
Clean the roof lay the antislip mats down then place the handiracks on top, Open car doors and thread strap through the car and secure. inflate the two tubes in each handirack and job done for putting items on the rack.
I also have the wet weather kit as if you get hard rain this can wick down the straps and into the car.
The ends of the handirack just slide under the roof rails.
It's not perfect as the strap can touch your head where it goes through the front doors of the car, but as it's only used for holidays it's not really a problem.
When I was a service engineer got fed up of the subtle changes the cars had and needed to replace the roof bars and/or fitting clamps when the car was changed.
The handirack fits any car so not an issue.
I know it makes it a waste not using the roof rails, but when the car gets changed I know the handirack will be OK for the next car.
Just a thought.

I totally agree with your comments and today sent this letter :

Dear Customer Support Team,

I am looking to add roof bars to my newly purchased MG5 EV Exclusive but unfortunately this does not seem to be a listing on your web site.

Considering more than 30,000 Mg`s have been sold in the UK alone I find it strange that you don't have a listing!

Can you please advise me as to when you will be selling roof bars for the MG5 EV ?

Regards

This was a thread for roof bars for the Excite not the Exclusive which has roof rails and many have purchased bars to fit.
