I said way back that if Tesla opened to all cars they would be snowed under with damaged cables. Hundreds of Joe Bloggses pulling for all they are worth trying to get the short cable to reach.
Most newer chargers now take contactless so that's an improvement. If you're not sure where you'll be travelling I'd start with signing up to podpoint so you can use the chargers in Tesco car parks. After that see what is near where you travel.
Of course get yourself a home charger if you can...
I think most chargers that share power these days do it intelligently, the charger will allocate more power to the car that needs it more, in Adam's case above it seems they both needed about the same so it split pretty evenly.
I've done it in thick fog before now, that was scary! the scariest thing usually is the lesser spotted campervan straining to get up the hill.
There are Rapids at Gairloch and at Achnasheen which are within easy reach if you find yourself low.
If you mean the charger by the police station, I've used it ok but have had your exact issue on another of the same type when the charge failed a year or so ago. Called the AA out and their guy cleared the fault by clearing 'all errors' via his tablet. It hasn't come back so far.
