This is a 1 series, Exclusive trim, June 2021. It should be the same on yours unless Bluetooth has been upgraded which should 'theoretically' be more compatible.
I'm surprised you had problems with a Samsung as it along with Pixel phones are thought to be the most compatible with Android Auto. Glad you had some success though.
Update... My user manual states both USB outlets under dash are data. This is wrong or one does not work. I had at some point disconnected from one socket and stuck the cable in the other without thinking. I blame myself for not checking the other socket before complaining as this socket works...
