In a word, no. Two phones cannot connect at the same time. The iSmart app can only be used by one person at a time and only one account can bind to a car (so to use multiple phones you have to use the same account on both and when one logs in, the other is immediatly logged out).

Interestingly, when we had the Marvel R we never could feel the second gear kick in, the change was imperceptable so I'd be surprised if, even if the MG4 did have 2 gears (unlikely) one would feel it select the second.
