I would recommend that for a slow puncture you drive to a good tyre shop and get it repaired properly (usually with a plug). The gunk tends to be only for temp measures (get you to a tyre repairer) and usually renders the tyre (and possibly sensors) knackered.
Can I suggest that before taking these steps you give the citizens advice (CAB) a call. Regardless of guarantees I believe that you can get refund up to 6 years after purchase if item can be demonstrated not fit for purpose (and as its broken without spares you most definitely can). I did this...

I took the plastic rims off before taking to the garage, in this weather i would heat with a hair drier first. Bought mine through black circles who have a very good local fitter, much better than the larger chains.
All season I think are the way to go. The Michelin cross cimate 2 or Continental all season contact 2 are the best and are fully winter (snow) and summer tyres. I changed mine to the continentals, they have really improved handling with no efficiency consequenses...
Manual release is at approx 3.59, I am not sure if this unlocks the flap as well (could you please let us know?)
