I understand it to be the On Board Charger (OBC) that needs updating to allow the unlocked AC charging not the EVCC.

Its a very powerful with VAG cars, I was hoping there would have been a few more EV parameters available on OBD2. As for cheaper, they now retail at £450, I paid ~£250 about 10 years ago when I had an Audi A3.
VCDS can talk to the car and pull basic vehicle info and DTC(Diagnostic Trouble Codes). Unfortunately there weren't any EV specific parameters available in the Mode 1 Read Data option.
VCDS is a VAG specific tool with the option for OBD2.
