Renamed - the immersion heater thread (was about about cost of SVR vs Go)

My switch is a bit clunky too! It’s not stiff, but it takes a bit of an effort to get it moving. The shower was hot this morning so it did its job! :)

Someone is on a 'normal' standard tariff, why would they buy an MG4 in this example?

That analogy about a mobile phone is perfect!

Renamed - the immersion heater thread (was about about cost of SVR vs Go)

Not a problem! It’s a cheap (ish) little gadget that will just sit there doing its job. The switch is rated to 20a, and it means I don’t have to bother getting the sparky out, nor fiddling around with the electrics myself! I’m happy enough with how it works and as It’s in a cupboard I won’t see...

Renamed - the immersion heater thread (was about about cost of SVR vs Go)

Indeed I can! Although I was thinking of doing this initially and thought it might be a bit overkill! 😂😂 Link below: Sorry if quality is rubbish - it’s my first YouTube upload!

Renamed - the immersion heater thread (was about about cost of SVR vs Go)

It arrived! I’ve installed it (literally two 3m sticky pads) and it seems to be working! I have it set up to switch on at 02:30 and switch off at 06:30! Initial test seems good! It turns on and turns off. I did take a video but can’t upload those here. :(

Renamed - the immersion heater thread (was about about cost of SVR vs Go)

That was my understanding initially, but supposedly they do on/off with a rocker switch, it’s arriving today, so I’ll report back.

I’ve just ordered one of these instead, couldn’t be bothered to install a new switch (or pay someone to). This will just push the existing switch off and on with no wiring needed with a set timer - let’s see how it goes! https://amzn.eu/d/byRBryN

    Off-peak battery installation

I’m in Abergavenny, so not a million miles away, and our local guys were happy to do this. We had a quote for battery only, and a PV system with battery. Not sure if they’ll travel that far mind as I know they are massively massively busy!! In the end I decided to go with a PV system and...

    Is Octopus Go worth it?

Yup! Time of use tariffs are fantastic! Well done for beating the cap! :) I’ve been banging on about this for months lol! So apologies if people are getting weary of it! The earlier fixes (April, May, June) are looking to safe substantial amounts (or rather, not spend substantial amounts). There...

    Is Octopus Go worth it?

Yup! This is true - but what I’m basically saying - is - if you have an EV and aren’t on this tariff because you think the day rate is too high compared to the SVR now. You need to look at what’s happening in October. As it’s an EV forum, I’m assuming most here are able to qualify :)

    Is Octopus Go worth it?

Not any more - you'll benefit even if you don't move any of your electric to the cheap rate (AVE price per unit 40P). You'll benefit EVEN more if you do move it to the cheap rate (Ave Price Per unit - 20p) And you'll benefit the most if you have a storage battery (Ave Price Per Unit -8p). This...

    Is Octopus Go worth it?

Unfortunately all this info is some what out of date now. Basically - it makes total sense to transfer to Octopus Go, as at the moment the high day rates are cheaper - if you lock them in now for a year - than the SVR will be in October. So this basically means, even without charging at the...

Are high day rate time of use tariffs better than the variable rate?

It’s Editable too and everything changes depending on how much load shifting, home energy usage, mileage, car efficiency too - just need to edit the top table!

Are high day rate time of use tariffs better than the variable rate?

I’ve come up with a stupidly complicated and massive spreadsheet which was based on my initial calculations (couldn’t sleep last night!) I’ll try upload it somewhere! Or I can always input your figures if you want! :)

Are high day rate time of use tariffs better than the variable rate?

Yup indeed! Totally agree with this - it’s what I’m looking to do myself - but not everyone has the upfront cash (or the installers as they’re all so busy!)

Are high day rate time of use tariffs better than the variable rate?

Theoretically you won’t ever need to pull from the grid during the expensive part if using a battery, and if Solar too means your figure should be At most an average of 7.5p/kWh! So if you went with my figures of 6500 kWh, the maximum really you will ever pay is 6600 x 7.5p = £487.5 for...

Are high day rate time of use tariffs better than the variable rate?

I’d argue that taking into account charging losses and efficiency etc - that 3500kwh will give between 10,000-12,000 miles - but yes that’s what my figures are based on as that’s our (and my friends Yearly usage) - which then begs the question - why do people feel the need for an EV to have a...

Are high day rate time of use tariffs better than the variable rate?

Indeed it is! I was trying to explain to my friends how it’s all about the AVERAGE price per kWh, but they couldn’t see past the high day time rate - stating that it’s going to cost them more to be on Go (or any time of use tariff) as opposed to the standard variable as the price for that was...

Are high day rate time of use tariffs better than the variable rate?

This is a long read but it might help people who have an Electric Vehicle if they think the variable is their best or only option - Just been going through some figures for some mates to help them out with energy etc and it’s based on their rough usage (6500kwh/year -split between 3500 for...
