chassis rust

**Chassis rust** refers to corrosion that forms on a vehicle’s chassis—the main structural frame that supports the body, engine, suspension, and other components.

It occurs when metal parts of the chassis are exposed to moisture, salt (especially road salt), dirt, and air over time. This exposure causes oxidation, leading to the formation of rust (iron oxide).

Chassis rust can range from:
- **Surface rust** – light corrosion affecting only the outer metal layer
- **Scale rust** – flaking and pitting of the metal surface
- **Structural rust** – severe corrosion that weakens the frame’s strength and integrity

Severe chassis rust can compromise vehicle safety, handling, and crash protection, and may lead to expensive repairs or vehicle failure.
