After driving my MG4 for over a year now, I’ve realised range is way more dependent on conditions than I expected at first.

In summer, the car honestly does great and I stopped worrying about range pretty quickly. But in winter, motorway speeds + heating can make a noticeable difference. I’ve also found battery temperature affects charging speed more than people think.

Funny thing is, after a while I stopped chasing the “official” numbers and just learned how the car behaves in my normal routine.

Overall though, still really happy with it. For the price, hard to complain.

Curious how everyone else feels after longer ownership?
Has your real-world range changed much over time?

As an IM5 owner, I feel pretty much the same. The range is very stable in summer, but winter highway driving with heating definitely drains it faster. After a while, you stop relying on the official numbers and just learn the car’s real-world behavior in your daily routine. Battery temperature also affects fast charging more than many people expect. Overall though, I’m still very satisfied with the driving experience and running costs.

Your observations are basically standard. That said I have stopped worrying about this awhile ago. I go on the all year round theory of 2 miles per 1 %. Generally I get more than this but makes maths easy.

Funny thing is in general you get the same experience with an ICE car you just do not think about it.

Similar with me X Power after 19 months. I obviously get more in Summer than Winter. But that's as far as it goes, with me. I don't over analyse it, as it doesn't really bother me. But fair enough, for those, that it does. 🙂👍

Used to drive an MG4 SE, never saw WLTP figures in my driving and yes the range drop in the winter due to the heater was noticeable especially on short trips

Now have sn Urban standard range, and although i haven't yet driven in subzero temperatures, i exceeded WLTP figures on a regular basis from the end of march when the weather was still rather cold, <10C, and i gained 0.4 m/kWh with the weather in the last couple weeks but i really can't see the range dropping much in winter. time will tell.

When you say Motorway speeds are you saying 70mph plus? There's your problem.

I set the ACC to 65mph. Exactly as in my old Mokka-e its pretty much the sweet spot between speed and consumption.

If you want the wltp figures you need summer weather and stick to 30mph. Its not real world behavior though.

As I started with my car in Winter I got used to the worst case scenario from day one. Then as I moved into the first year of ownership with better temperatures things only got better. After two and a half years and just over 9,500 miles I am averaging 2.9 miles per kw or just over 180 miles on a 100% charge. I think that is ok for an AWD car that can get to 60 in under 4s.

To be fair this was pretty much no different to my previous ICE car which would also vary in range from under 300 miles to over 400 miles between fill ups depending on use case and ambient temperatures.

You just look at the fuel gauge (be it charge or liquid) and top up as required, as you would with any car.
