I'm sticking the charger into the car, but it won't start

If I stick it in and out a few times, it does start.

Is there some way to troubleshoot this?

Does it have a sensor in the connector?

Does it report any messages anywhere?

Which charger are you talking about. The DC chargers have very heavy plugs and sometimes they don't make a good connection on the small pilot pins.
If you hold the plug up a bit while it starts, wait until you hear the car lock the plug in place and start charging.
Also make sure all the car doors are closed , if a door is open a bit the car will stop charging.
If those things don't work then try cleaning the pins on the car socket. The small pins are for communication with the car from the charger, if they are dirty then the car does not get the message that a charger is plugged in.
If none of those work then take the 12 volt battery negative terminal off , leave it off for 10 minutes or so then reconnect the battery. this is called the 10mm spanner fix.
good luck

Also make sure all the car doors are closed, if a door is open a bit the car will stop charging.
I find that opening (a) door(s) stops the charging for 10-20 seconds, then the charging resumes.

If you want to wake up the charging screen, use the key fob's close door button. This won't pause charging.

Does it have a sensor in the connector?
Yes, it senses the resistor between the proximity pilot pin and the earth pin. It also needs to see the control pilot signal. So check the two thin, smaller pins in the EVSE ("charger") plug. It's normal for the control pilot pin to be shorter than the others. Also, some of the pins have plastic at the end for safety, so actual contact is made further back on the metal parts of the pins.
