I once drove my VW Beetle through water that turned out to be just under the armpits .... discovered that when it started to float and one of the idiots in the car with me opened the passenger side door on the upstream side (Shoalhaven River upper regions) and it started to sink, opened my drivers door on the down stream side to let the water out, stepped out off the running board only to drop down to the arm pits .... freezing cold because it was snow melt, and determined we had been washed off the causeway

In my defence, the road ran down the hill and across the river and up the otherside, plenty of tyre tracks, turned out all the people that lived the other side of the river had jacked up 4 X 4's
After we built a fire to warm up a bit, we ventured back in, floated it to the otherside, a bottle of metho poured in the distributor and cap and the rest down the carby ..... pushed it up the road still it turned over enough to splitter to life, drenched them all in black crap when the exhaust pushed all the water out, chucked a u turn and back across the causeway

made them all walk back across the causeway to get back in the car .....
That mighty beetle kept going for another 2 yrs until I sold it ......
