Is the outgoing MG5 the last of the 'cheap' over 200 miles EVs ?

The facelift ZS is more expensive than the Gen 1, which in turn was more expensive than the 5 to start with and I'm sure the facelift 5 will be more expensive than the Mk1 MG5, SR or LR..

I think we all know that we need more EVs that are affordable but each new one, from any manufacturer, that comes out seems to be getting more expensive instead. Perhaps they will be 'value for money' at whatever the price they put on but do we all need the spec that we have to pay for?
Do we need more of the old 'Escort L trim' type of EVs, i.e. base models ?

With the production line started for the MG4 (see link below) which looks very nice, where will that sit in the price spectrum?

Could we be sitting in a classic of the future, or indeed now, with good range, good spec, all at a price at the bottom end of the market.

Hi
The โ€œLโ€ model was the mid range in the escort mk2๐Ÿ˜‚
As far as I recall it went
Pop
Pop plus
L
Gl
Ghia
And of course the sporty models
1300s
1600s
Mexico
RS 1800
RS 2000
It would be so funny to see a basic electric car with manual windows no air con, central locking, no frills what do ever

Oh the envy I used to have from neighbours with the prestigious โ€œGhiaโ€ badge

Prices rises are one of my main concerns, while I'm looking for my first EV.
MG EVs are on my short list, and the soon-to-be-released MG4 seems to be the perfect EV for me with a good mix between ZS and MG5 specs.
However, I'm worried that it might finally be listed with a price tag more expensive than expected, and that I would miss some current good deals on either the ZS or MG5...

(by the way I'm new on this forum, so "Hi everyone! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ")

There are a lot of other Chinese cars on the way to keep MG and others honest. :)

Watch Sandy Munroโ€™s videos about EVs and his analysis of what China is capable of exporting from its large number of EV firms.

MG need to be careful with the pricing of the EV range they getting too close to the more premium brands and soon more Chinese car brands will be available in the UK and you can bet they will be pricing to build there brand

Unfortunately all EV prices are increasing, just glad I ordered early enough to avoid the increases.

O those days when petrol was about a ยฃ1 a GALLON ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
Oh dear I must be old, I remember being able to get 4 gallons for ยฃ1 filling my dad's car up, although when I got my first car prices had gone up and could only get about 3 gallons for a ยฃ1.
c. 5.5p/litre and later 7.5p/litre for the younger members.

I remember as a child that the news had a big story story of ยฃ1 a gallon, that equates to ยฃ7.41 for a gallon now๐Ÿ˜ณ. I dread filling up now.

I sold my old Hillman Minx for a fiver when petrol hit 50p in the early seventies fuel crises.
I've still got the fuel coupons the government was preparing to introduce. (Which I think we're left over from WW2).

Just found some figures courtesy of How much did things cost in the 1970s?.

...The 1973 oil crisis was responsible for some of the increase, but in real terms the cost of fuel remained remarkably static.

In 1970s a gallon of petrol cost 6s 8d (33p), at the end of the decade it was just short of the pyschological ยฃ1 per gallon.

Source: Petrol prices 1896 to present, published by the AA Motoring Trust.

Today we pay for fuel in litres. Comparisons:

YearPrice per litreCost in today's money
19701s 6d83p
197922p84p

70p or so per gallon when I started driving as I remember.
You also had an attendant put it in the tank!

When I was a schoolboy (long ago!) I had a weekend / holiday job in a petrol station. This would be in the early 1960s.

Esso Regular was 4s and 4d a gallon
Esso Mixture* was 4s and 6d a gallon
Esso Extra was 4s and 8d a gallon
Esso Golden was 4s and 10d a gallon.
In each case the tax was 3s and 9d for a gallon.

For those younger people on here 1s (shilling) is what we call 5 pence and there was 12 pennies (d) to a shilling.

Everything changed in 1971 when we went decimal - the biggest cause of inflation ever seen in this country (IMHO)

Dave

The fuel duty escalator introduced to "nudge" people into using less has been suspended for the last 12 years during which time people are actually using more fuel despite ICE being more efficient and mileages decreasing even prior to lockdown. People are failing to take the necessary actions to save the environment despite knowing about the issue. It is clear that more incentivisation is required.

I worked in a petrol station for a brief time in the early 70s. Remember having to out a squirt or two of some oil in a wheeled tank into motorbikes, along with the petrol? Presume two strokes or similar?
