I have tried to link two 5 metre type 2 cables together to make an extension. It doesn’t appear to work, any ideas?

Do not do it.
The pins don't make proper contact and it won't be water or splash proof.

There are sensors in the plugs which do not pass through. You would need a dedicated extension cable

Note the specific socket end.

If you look in the end of one of the plugs you'll see that one of the control pins (the little thin ones at the top) is very short.

They are designed so that you can't daisy chain them. There are ways that you could overload a cable, and the resistor in each plug system won't stop it from happening and becoming a fire hazard.

It can be overcome with a hacksaw, the relevant figure is 11mm. But hopefully you have been deterred by now. Using the hacksaw means that the cable will no longer lock, so you'd be ruining an expensive cable.
