MG4 charging leads provided with new car

We are looking forward to picking up a new pre reg MG4 se next week. Dealer thinks car will not come supplied with a granny charger to allow home charging until I sort out a proper charger install at home . I'm sure that any cars I looked at previously had a round bag and a square bag in boot containing both cables to allow charging. Can any owner who has purchased an MG4 se recently share experiences of what cables were supplied with their car ? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the welcome Mg Clive ! Not what I wanted to hear, this being our first ev and having to travel around 300 miles to collect ( red cars apparently sold out everywhere we tried locally ) its already going to be a steep learning curve !

@ross, welcome to the forum. A genuine used charger can be found on a certain selling site. That's where they all are. You could also get a compatible charger from Amazon.

Cheers, will have a look. Feels a bit like I've bought a new car with a locking fuel cap but they won't supply the key without paying more ! Probably everyone feels a bit of anxiety on their first long drive and it comes to charging time but if it all goes sour I'll resort to Basil Fawlty and look for a branch !!

Hello I've just taken delivery of a S5 having moved from a ZS. All seems OK at the moment but will take some time to get my head around all of the settings.
My question is what is provided in the way of equipment, I have puncture repair kit, the same as the ZS, a type 2 charging cable but no granny charger is this right?

It is my understanding that the S5 tends to be accompanied with a type 2 charging cable, but no Granny unit.
When I asked the same question to our supplying dealer, the sales manger told me that they have issuing new customers with the type 2 cable, over...

Both my 4 + 5 came with Type 2 cables but no Granny charger as standard, at the end of last year, but luckily the dealer did find a granny for me which he threw in the trunk!

Welcome, mine just came with a type 2 to type 2 cable, you could try to ask a dealership to include one but they may not have one to spare.

Welcome to the forums, congrats on the car. Noticed you said a 300 mile journey, so you’ll probably have to pop in to rapid charger along the way. And type 2 cable won’t be needed for that as rapid chargers (DC) come supplied with their own cables (they ate tethered). A type 2 cable is only needed for AC charging (7-22kW chargers).

The learning curve may be steep but it’s not a long one, you’ll get the hang of it soon. And most other EV drivers are always happy to help.

If I were you I would order a granny online to charge from home until your charger gets installed, but I wouldn’t worry much about bringing it with me to pick up the car.

As a side note I do believe that an EV should always come with a granny charger, sort of like a spare tyre. But obviously dealerships seem to disagree. I do keep one in my car, if I ever run too low on juice out in the country, I can hopefully pay someone to slowly add some electrons from their house.

Thanks all, I had spotted various places selling chargers but it seems dealers are cutting margins to the bone in order to sell their quotas and are reluctant to ' give ' any thing extra away included in price eg basic foot mats / cables etc. I'm sure if they could hand over the car with 1 % battery and only 3 wheels they would ! From my understanding it just seems to be a bit if a lottery of what you get when you open the boot. If MG don't supply now as a rule from new, that's probably a mistake as they will be manufactured in China for pennies then it seems that it's the owner's job to provide. Perhaps it is pictures of year old cars for sale I saw that displayed an array of cables in the boot, in MG logo bags.
I started this evening with a cup of coffee and a downloaded copy of the owners manual.... After around 80 pages I'm reaching for something stronger !

When I got my car, the stupid grin on my face after the test drive, which pretty much read "take my money" rather stood in the way of getting any freebies. He made me pay for the mats and the type 2 cable. But at least I got a granny cable. (There's nothing quite like taking your car home and plugging it straight into the wall socket...)

Rather than buying an MG type 2 charger which is a very basic unit with just status lights, why not go for one which has a display so you can keep a record of how much energy you are putting in. The Third Rock type 2 charger's display when I checked with them, keeps the total of kWh used in its display incrementing each time it is used.

Do the third rock have all the UK protection stuff? I was looking at getting their 32A cee charger but couldn’t figure out if they did.

@redwood98, the portable 13A granny charger looks to have all the protection for something that plugs into a UK 13A socket. Third Rock have all the usual safety information about the type of socket to be used, and not using an extension lead.

If you are talking about the 32A CEE bundle with PME unit then, while you can buy this sort of bundle, getting it fitted domestically would be a problem. There is some debate over whether either the 16A or 32A CEE form connectors comply even if they have a locked and electrically switched output. The Third Rock bundle shows neither of these features on the socket shown.
There are then considerations when using this amount of power (up to 32A) if your supply is suitable. You may have a looped supply, or the supply cable/ board fuse is not the right rating. These would normally be checked by a home charger installer in a servey and if required changed or updated by the DNO.
So in short, while this bundle is available to buy I don't think you'd get any reputable and certified electrician to install it.

I already have a 32a cee socket installed, which is why I am looking for a cee ev charger as it will save me a lot of money on an install. It has its own 32a breaker etc... I think that is a PME unit

I'd see if it does come with one or the other. (you never know)
But if it doesn't I'd Defo get a Type 2 and a Granny, there not particularly expensive.
Then you are covered for any eventuality.
For the price, of um. It's a no brainer.
