Yesterday, I got the first chance to see (and sit in) the new MG4 (and facelifted MG5).

First impressions were "wow!"

The quality of the finish was very impressive. This was in Trophy specification, in the new Camden Grey paint colour, with a 64kWh battery. Interior space has been maximised by using a long wheelbase (the MG4 wheelbase is only 15mm shorter than the MG HS). This gives shorter overhangs, with more passenger space compared to traditionally proportioned cars.

The boot was a good size, with a two level floor. No figures were given regarding litre capacity, but it appeared bigger than say Kia Niro Electric.

The rear passenger space is good for 2 adults and a child, with excellent headroom and legroom. Flat floor through the back. No rear courtesy lights though (!).

LED headlights front and rear. No Frunk.

The dashboard design is well laid out, with a quality fit and finish throughout. Clearly this is a car which has been benchmarked against the iD3, but I'd objectively say that this feels more premium.

Under the floating drive-mode selector, there is a storage console with 2 cupholders, a roller-shutter covered large drawer, and a couple of USB sockets.
Behind the drive mode selector is a wireless phone charger (with a removable cover, where you can pass USB cables through if required).

There is no start-stop button on the MG4. To start it, you simply get into the car with the key, and put your foot on the brake.

I have been told by an MG UK engineer that the CCS charging speed on the 51kWh variant is around 90-100kW, and on the 64kWh version it is 120-130kW peak.

Pricing will be disclosed officially within a few weeks, however I can confirm that previously speculated price points are correct. This is an awful lot of car for significantly less than many competitors.

Demonstrators should land with dealers by September. There are 250 cars landing in August, which is enough for one demonstrator and one showroom car per dealership (nearly).

MG plans to have 2000 MG4 available for delivery in the UK before the end of 2022. We don't yet know which specifications/colours will be available first.

Thanks Miles, it looks great! No doubt many a head-to-head vs the ID.3 is incoming. The cheapest one VW seem to have on their selector starts at £36k, so I'll be interested to see the full specs and the price for the Trophy as well as the base SE in comparison.

I really like the grey, the lighting around the charge port and what can be seen of the overall finish. I'm baffled though as to why MG have an issue including rear cabin lights, especially with a darker interior. I hope they've not also overlooked the steering being adjustable for reach.

Personally I wouldn't again risk waiting up to a year as with the ZS. With that in mind, customers will want to know when they can put their name down to secure one of those initial 2,000. I know it's early doors, so wouldn't expect you to have that info already...just hope MG is putting some kind of order mechanism in place for those.

Very good looking car and I'm sure it will do well.

However, can someone clarify something about the rear window for me - does it have some kind of wash/wiper system that isn't readily visible?

Thanks for the info. I have spotted a post suggesting that the 'Mulan' has 1500kg towing capacity. Was there any info given on towing capacity? (if not are you able to find out?)

Shame about the lack of rear wiper. I had a Passat once that was missing a rear wiper (intentionally). Worked fine going forwards, not helpful if you have to reverse in the rain though!

Thanks Miles!

Do you have any further details on Lane Change Assist (LCA)? Some of the early reporting said it had up to Level 3 autonomous driving support. Now I don't believe for a second we'll get that here, but some self driving capability that is more sophisticated than the current ping pong MG Pilot would be great!

Also, any chance of light interior... or all black only?

Thanks again!

Thats such a massive shame that the higher spec has 11 miles less range. Would be good to get rid of the rear spoiler and anything else that affected the drag, seems very silly so have a higher spec that does less miles.

Hi Miles,
I've been watching the zsev blog now for many months whilst I await my facelift LR.
Very impressed. It looked a bit busy under the bonnet, Is this rear wheel drive as stated in earlier release spec? And are you taking deposits yet?

Cheers
Phil

I like the fact that there is a light in the charging port, but not a great sign that one is broken already!! :O Also would have prefered it on the front of the car.
Why broken? Maybe it shows SoC. This one is 25% charged. Why 25% and not 75%? All lights are on when the car is empty, and all are off when the car is full and you do not need to connect the charger :)

yeah thats probably it, didn't think of that! Though it is probably the other way round, so it lights up when full, rather than empty.

Good theory, but the MG4 was charged to 81%. So it lights up to show 25% increments of charge.

Yes, this is RWD. The AWD version will be heading this way in 9-12 months.
