I have someone in the family who might go for a MG4 Urban (Comfort spec) as a used unit by next year and just wanted to ask how you guys like it so far? I drive a 2023 MG4 and therefore know some of the annoyances:

  • How good is the sound system (as a HiFi guy the most important question - the stock MG4 Luxury system is honestly not too bad)?
  • Do your cars have the same condensation issues like the normale MG4 in the taillights?
  • The Urban doesn't have independent suspension in the rear - is it noticeable or fine?
  • What is the real range of the car / what's the consumption?
  • How good are the headlights in the darkness (I really like the MG4 headlights for their wide side spread and hope the Urban ones a similar good)?
  • From watching a couple of reviews the interior quality looks very good - Do you agree?
  • How good is the important part of the software (like acc, 360cam.. - I don't care if the YouTube implementation is just a shitty browser port as long as CP or AA works)
  • What are your overall thoughts on the car?

Thank you guys in advance!

I shared most of my thoughts already in another thread.
I think though, if you are looking to buy in a years time, that you wait to get answers to some of those questions until then.
Right now it's too early to give feedback about mid to long term potential issues

You will want to ask about:
  • OE tyres: winter vs summer performance
  • Fuel consumption year round
  • quality issues with the interior
  • potential upgrades (for one i'm definitely thinking of upgrading the front speakers)

I upgraded my sound system as well (with a MG4 specific kit). Maybe it will fit the urban as well

We test drove the MG4 Urban Comfort model today (in Germany the middle version between the small battery and the premium version).

  • We didn't test the sound system. You could always have it improved by adding a DSP amp. I have some users in the Cyberster forum which had this done. I heard one and the improvement was decent but noticeable. The owner was a guy who sold car hifi systems in the past.

  • The car drove great and smooth. Couldn't tell a difference to the older MG4, which my son drives.

  • Interior feels great for that price class. fake leather (sorry, "vegan"), stitchings and real metal applications. The premium model even features a fake leather driving wheel. You won't find that quality in other cars with that price tag (I compare prices in Germany, where MG currently gives €6k rebate)

  • Couldn't test 360° cam since the dealer only had the comfort model and not the premium one with that camera.

  • we'll order the car next week. I think, that's a good overall thought :)

MG4 EV Urban Premium Long Range

Hi, I have owned the Urban now for just over a week and I have to say it is a very good car, a good fir myself and family anyway... I only have one annoyance, the fact that you have to use MG Pilot every time to turn off some of the annoying alerts, like over speed audio and am I paying atentio n audio!. I have forgotten already how many times I have set off and forgotten to hit the customised button.
So far it is the only issue I have, which does not detract from the fact it is a great car!!!

I love my shiny new Urban!
Couple of annoyances: cornering view only appears if I start indicating at less than 15km/h (not great for road rage prevention) and the 360 camera only comes on automatically in reverse gear.

Hi @zedsdad, welcome to MGEVs, yes I noticed the side camera view when indicating, now activates at a much lower speed than it used to on the previous MG4 model.

I like it overall, it’s an upgrade on my MG3 hybrid.

Like:

  • it feels very smooth to drive, very responsive and doesn’t feel slow which I was a bit worried about
  • love the look of the car and like the high driving position
  • the range is great, I have the basic model and it’s so for averaging around 5 miles per kWh.

Dislikes:
  • no folding mirrors on standard range :(
  • the gear selector being on the right stalk - WHYYY? I hate it so much. I miss the dial.
  • as above, the controls for the windscreen wipers being on the left stalk
  • I don’t find the indicator stalk very responsive when it needs to cancel itself

I suppose you'll soon get used to it, but it all seems a bit wrong doesn't it, and what about having to go into the screen to turn the lights on or off, what's that all about.

Indicators on left stalk, wipers on right stalk .. that's the way all cars should be. I don't even mind the reversed direction of the wiper stalk that many (Stellantis?) cars use (down rather than up), at least the wipers are on that stalk. :)

i actually prefer the gear selector stalk to the centre wheel. don't mind about the wipers being on the left stalk and certainly hardly ever had to use the light selection switch on the old mg4 so i don't miss it at all

I’m sure it’s something I’ll get used to! And then in a few years time I’ll get another MG and no doubt the gear selector will be somewhere else again 😂

The StalkGate conversation here reminds me of Tesla forums when everyone was saying how wonderful and innovative it was to have no stalks..
Didn't take them long to put them back though; clearly most UK drivers hated it.
Wonder if MG will do the same thing with the UK export of the Urban in a future facelift.

Having it on the stalk is a positive design compromise because it frees up a lot of space on the console for other things. It shouldn't take long to get used to it.

MG4 Urban 54 (Australia)
1) Sound system perfectly fine, clear, at least for classical music and speech
2) No condensation seen
3) It drives comparable to any European hatch - very good adhesion on our mountain roads, excellent driving capability
4) Mostly freeway and country roads, almost no town, 350km range from the 54kW version. About 15kW/100km averaging over the past 2500km. We make no attempt to save energy. Pretty good results.
5) Headlights are excellent per best contemporary standards. Auto high-beam dipping is 90% reliable only.
6) Interior is perfect - no trouble at all. Some say fake leather seats can get sweaty in hot climate - not a problem in Tasmania.
7) Software is 8/10. Cameras are adequate. Next to no problems.
8) Would like normal wipers and lights stalks - shifting on stalk and everything combined in the other is a dumb idea - just like what Teslas do. Why reinvent the wheel. Overall, I give the car easy 8/10, where 10 is a unicorn (doesn't exist), and 9 would probably cost 10x the price of the "MG".

Hope this helps.

Picked up my new car on Friday and absolutely loving it - early days yet of course (and my very first EV!). Range on its first full battery has been over 300 miles so well impressed given the WLTP spec of 248 miles. OK, so I know it won’t be as good when it gets cold or if I drive it like an idiot but those days are far behind me :D . Still discovering all the options on offer. Struggled connecting the phone with Android Auto but that’s due to my cheap Chinese phone I’m sure rather than the interface on the car - works when it’s hard wired, just won’t connect via BT even though I’m running Android13. Connects to the phone option just fine so that’s all I need.
