Came home in daylight, walked off forgetting to lock car. Later when darkness fell had a neighbour call to say my headlights etc were on. The auto headlight feature had turned them on ! Popped back and locked car. Surprised as I had assumed if you left the car i.e out of keyfob range it would switch itself off ? Maybe even lock itself? Any ideas?

That's what I'd expect it to do. It was waiting for you to come back and you did!
Have to admit I'd prefer to have a physical Power On/Off button but you could always get into the habit of powering down via the touchscreen before leaving the car.

Yes same here. I think what happened was I got out leaving my partner in the car. I got something from my house but in the meantime she got out and was waiting for me outside the car. We then both walked off to her house without me thinking about locking the car. Presumably I could have locked the car via the app, but I walked back to thank my neighbour in person so just did it whilst there. Can you imagine, airport and as you take off you see your car put its lights on ! Ha ha.

I've got into the habit of looking for the double flash of the indicators when I walk away from the car and the mirrors folding back, but even then you only need something to distract you and you forget to either press the button on the door or the keyfob.

Mind you in the days of a mechanical key I still left the lights on occasionally 😁

Yes did that in New Zealand once with a hire car that had no warning bleep. Which leads me on to, does the MG have a lights on warning if you walk away with them on and don't lock it up? I'll have to try it one evening.

Possibly an MG quirk. Can't remember exactly how my MG4 behaved but it was left in a dark garage unlocked (as there was no point having the alarm on draining the 12V battery in a locked garage). Other makes wait for a time-out after the key has gone out of range then shut the car down, some only activate the headlights when the driver is seated. Modern headlights are much more efficient but leaving the headlights on was a classic way to get a flat battery.

I do a similar check myself Ian, I check the position of the door mirrors.
If they are extended, then it’s not locked 🔐.
Come on folks, hands up 🙌 time.
Once while at home on the drive, I got out of the car, still powered up, gone to do something and got distracted by the postman.
Collected our mail and then walked into the house, it was 5 minutes later I went back outside to water some plants and could hear music 🎶 being played.
I then realised that car was still sitting there waiting for my return !.
Proper school boy error or OAP senior moment 🤣 at play here !.
If the radio 📻 can still be heard when you are standing outside, then it’s still unlocked.

If you swipe down on the infotainment screen and select power off, you will get a lights on warning when you open the door.

If on the other hand you simply exit the vehicle, then there is no warning.
