Hi, my second service on Trophy LR 2023 model is due. It's done slightly under 14,000 miles. I've been quoted £195 by Eden Motor Group in Newton Abbot, where I bought. Is that reasonable compared to what others have paid?

For a visual inspection, less checks than an MOT and change the pollen filter (if you're lucky) sounds about right for main-dealer prices :(

That's what I paid them to do my 2nd year service, their rates are reasonable.

Mine was £165 from the supplying (now ex) main dealer. Visual inspection, pollen filter and key fob battery.

I’ve booked it in for 2nd service at £195. When booking the wanted to upsell me with aircon gas top up and aircon system “purge”. £40 for the former £100 and something for both. My aircon is working fine and I’ve done only 13K miles. Are these two just extra revenue for the dealer, in any way necessary?

Trying it on, if it's working fine, nuff said.
The time to have it done, is when it's not fine. If it ain't broke........ 🙂👍

They told me over £400 for the second service, then tried to upsell me nearly £2,000 worth of extra work including the aircon thing, replacing the brake pads and discs and replacing slightly damaged front undertrays and a wheel arch liner. Details now in the thread about Macklin Motors Edinburgh West in the dealers subforum.

In the end I paid about £300, which was what they charged me at the end of that appointment, strangely leaving the balance to be paid when the car came back for the door button repair under warranty. After the huge row we had when I accused them of upselling unnecessary work, I left in high dudgeon and no further invoice appeared .

Think yourself lucky .

Over the years I've had so many cases of technical/mechanical/builder type people trying it on and upselling things or over-quoting me and, on many occasions, quoting me more than they quote my husband. But with an engineering degree and lifetime in electronics/software I can usually put them in their place and embarrass them with my greater knowledge than they have - either that or send hubby round. Makes me so angry - feeky chuckers as @securespark so nicely put :)

It pees me right off. I went to an exhaust place with my sister in the 80s, it was her car.

The guy came out and started addressing me about the issues.

I said, "Please talk to my Sister...it's her car."
But what really annoyed me was they knew it was her car.

But regarding having blazing arguments, I bought a second hand Xantia TDi estate from a main dealer. It had a very low mileage, it was around 3 years old and had about 9K.

After a short time of driving, the STOP light came on. As soon as I could, I stopped and rang the dealer. No worries, I was told, bring it down as soon as you can and we will have a look at it.
So I took it straight home and then went straight to the dealer the very next morning.

Turned out the pads had gone down to the metal and forked the discs.

So I ended up having a shouting match (in a showroom with several customers in) with the service guy who argued it was wear and tear. I was arguing that I had only driven a few hundred miles, plus the system does not work if it it warns you to STOP after the damage is done!

So we agreed that they would pay for new discs and I would pay for new pads and they would cover the labour.

Wow, what sharks! I hate all this.

Glad you didn't cave in.

For anybody who doesn't know:

- Aircon doesn't need recharging unless it is no longer working effectively and usually when that happens there is a leak that needs fixing first. Typically lasts 7-10 years.

- Brake fluid doesn't need changing unless it has water in it which can be tested without changing it. Maybe worth changing every 5-7 years but not every 2 years as some dealers try.

- Brake pads and discs in an EV shouldn't need doing until 100,000 miles, unless discs are damaged through lack of use (regularly do a long hard brake from high speed to clean them up).

- Undertrays and wheel arch liners are incredibly cheap bits of plastic that should be a minimal cost to replace and should not fall off in the first place.

- Coolant fluid doesn't need changing before the MG service schedule unless there's a problem with it (eg highly discoloured).

On the flip side, it is worth replacing wiper blades regularly but you can do that yourself easily enough. Never accept a high charge to do that from the dealer and bear in mind they'll probably fit the cheapest option.

And keeping your tyres in good tread is important as is not saving money on budget tyres when you spent a packet on the car itself, that doesn't make sense.

Agree with everything, apart from the very last point. I've bought budget tyres, for my new 19s.
And to be fair, I've had budget tyres on a lot of my motors, particularly when, money was tight. And never had any trouble with them, whatsoever. If they are as bad as everyone thinks they are. You'd see cars littered everywhere. Funnily enough, you don't. 🙂👍

Fair enough. I didn't mean they were unsafe, but that you are sacrificing performance if you skimp on the very things that put the power to the road and keep you on it around corners.

Now, maybe that's not a priority for some people and certainly tyres have become a lot more expensive in the last few years, so I can understand the need to save money.
