Quite an amusing video describing how little difference going really fast (70+) compared to say 60 makes when travelling. Possibly quite relevant to an EV which gets decidedly less efficient at higher speeds.

Thanks for this - I saw it once and I've been looking for it ever since to share with people!

It's what I sort of know but often forget, if that makes sense?

If you are doing a journey of 150 miles at 60mph it will take 2hr 30mins. The same journey at 70mph will take 2hr 8min plus possibly a stop to recharge the battery which is going to take longer than the 22 minutes saved.

If you are on a busy motorway (M25 you know who I am meaning), then if trying to travel at 70mph you spend a lot of time decelerating and accelerating as you get caught up in the concertining traffic in the outer lanes. If doing 60mph in the correct inner lanes the journey is much smoother and journey time is not so different, and much more relaxing.

I had exactly that the other week coming home to Leeds down the A1M after a day out to Alnwick and area. As I was anticipating being really low on charge at the end (and not wanting to spend money on a splash and dash) I moderated my speed to 'lorry speed' and kept catching up with the same cars repeatedly.
I though like most others I reckon would still bowl along at 70, possibly because wrongly it feels like you are getting somewhere quicker.

As a footnote we set off with the GOM showing a range of 304 miles. We arrived home after travelling 274 miles with 10% left and 30 miles showing on the GOM. The weather was ideal for maximising EV range.

On long haul, I vary my speed based on the length between chargers, charging / break time at the next stop.

A long gap with unreliable chargers at the end is usually 60-65 mph; a normal gap with good chargers at the end & maybe a longer break for lunch will be 70-75 mph and the last stint to a known destination charger can be 75-80*mph or more on the motorway.

Also faster in summer due to faster charge speeds & longer range, slower in winter.

* I refer to continental motorways with higher speed limits & less traffic. Spain now has some 150 km/h limits!
