So some of you may know I pulled out of an MGS5 purchase a couple weeks back because of delivery date miscommunication. Well, the dealers were good about it and after some back and forth we got a deal on an in stock S5 just in a different colour so we decided to give them another chance. We went to the dealer today to pick the car up, all was going well until we got in the car and went to drive away only to notice the air-con was not working 😅. The buttons would not turn it on, and when you tried to turn it on on the screen the button would highlight and then go off again. Even if you tried to increase the fan speed from 0, it would let you drag the button, but then it would just snap back to 0, refusing to turn on. About 3 other sales people tried to get it to work and then one of the service managers tried with no success. So its gone to the garage to see if it can be fixed in the morning 🥲

I know this is an MG forum but objectively would you still take the car? I was really looking forward to the car, its by far got the best spec at its price point (for a reason?) but given MG's reliability issues I'm feeling a bit hesitant. Equally maybe I've just been unlucky.

One of the senior sales people said it should just be a software issue but my concern is that even if it is, what is the fix? Are they just going to either unplug and plug the battery back in? Or uninstall and then reinstall the software? Because that feels like taping over the issue rather than fixing it.

I have no idea what the right thing is to do 😅

I'd wait and see what the issue actually was.
It could be something as simple as operator error and they probably have little more idea of how it works than you have.

Objectively it might, yes, you could go to a Volkswagen dealer and get similar issues, or any other dealer. The tells will be how well your current garage handles the problem, they already seem to be willing, so give them a chance and see how it goes... IF you really want the car.

I do want the car, I like everything that comes with it. I think its been a rocky start but I should give the benefit of the doubt

Just a couple of thoughts, was the car in some sort of dealer/display mode which had not be turned off. They could have tried a hard reboot by disconnecting the 12v battery for 10-15 minutes

I dont think it was, at least, it wasn't obvious. I think they've done that now and said the car should be ready by 3pm so I'll be able to talk to the service person then to see what they did

update: the issue was a software update issue. What was explained to me was that when the car is bought (I think particularly if it's a showroom car), there needs to be a software update so it's ready for consumer use. The way the updates work is there's a server in Birmingham that the car pings and Birmingham pings China. This can be patchy and it seems that the software update only partially completed and there were some missing files. The garage reinstalled everything and did a hard reset but I thought the explanation was pretty reasonable and the salespeople and service manager were lovely and put a lot into salvaging this.

So the car is finally at home, so far so good, absolutely love it and hopefully can play around a bit more over the weekend :)
