Not an MG
I was concerned to find that the MG5 has not been Euro NCAP tested. It has been C-NCAP tested but I have no faith in the results posted. The MG ZS EV has a five-star rating, but I would like to see the MG5 rating before ordering.

So here's a strange thing....only 13 cars have been NCAP tested for the whole of 2020 and 2021.

It can't get a 5 star rating as you now need all the crash avoidance tech, like auto emergency braking and blind-spot assist, etc.

It's likely to get a 3 or 4 star rating without the crash avoidance tech. It's my understanding that a current 3 to 4 star rating is equivalent of a 5 star rating from just a few years ago.

I would be happy with a three or four-star rating, but I would like to see it tested. The new Honda Jazz has been tested, so why not the MG5?

I think when the ZS first came out it was not 5 star rated. I seem to remember seeing a review where the reviewer was very critical.

Hi Jocko I don’t think the MG5 my friend in my opinion will ever get a 5 Star NCAP rating might just scrape a 3 for at least 3 reasons as I can think off,1 no safety tech ie crash avoidance, roof bars that are fitted to the exclusive that must NOT be loaded and most of all MG,who do not appear interested in safety in any way shape or form, latest being on the ZS ev ie, total loss of power without any kind of warning according to things I have read on here in the last few days, very bad attitude MG motors appear to have, not only with us the customers but also it’s dealership according to some pity full,
but will it change I doubt it as long as sales figures are still ok they probably will not even submit it for testing.

Perhaps I would be better looking at a different EV brand if that is the feeling here.
Bit of trolling going on, methinks. It's not the feeling here at all. Very happy with car as having had a number of other makes over the years, this has surprised me as being built very well. After research I discovered that it comes from the same plant that makes VW in China. No problems at all with it for me, and compared to so called premium makes I've had (BMW, Audi and Mercedes) this is a good car at amazing value. It has things that they have learnt from others to fit as standard, and totally surprised me that it comes with all season tyres, which for me on UK cars should come with an additional star just for that. Like all makes there are I suspect some Friday specials (even Elon says he has those), and some people may have had the misfortune to get one of those......and the Mercedes 220 I had was definitely one of those (nothing like the engine stopping in the fast lane of the M25!)

The ZS may have had issues but I've not heard anything bad about the MG5 and I've only had mine a week but very impressed so far.

Yes the roof bars may not be legally allowed to be used yet but if it came with none like the excite version would we be complaining?Hopefully they will pass them soon.

Roof bars aren't an issue with me. I don't need them, so I would be happy with them as a "Decorative feature", but Les Burrows post is rather offputting. I know Chinese made Honda's are good cars, but I am about to purchase my first "new" car and don't want to make a big mistake.

Don’t allow Les’s post to put you off - particularly if you’re not fussed about roof bars. If you took a straw poll of actual MG EV owners, you would find that the majority would rate their vehicles very highly. Sure there have been issues for some owners (as there have been for just about every other motor brand) but in general they are well made and represent incredible value for money. By scrapping your plans and going for a ”different EV brand” you would almost certainly be making an expensive miscalculation - IMHO

Jocko les here please please don’t be put off by me, I’m in the same boat as you mate first ever new car 75 years old so probably my last as well, I like you have been on these forums for a while now and read loads and sean loads of videos and learned a hell of a lot about BEVs and not just MGs ,nothing is perfect in life no matter what you buy or where ever it comes from but please make sure they are safe some people like to say I think the saying goes you only get what you pay for, but with BEVs that sometimes does not ring true, my son has a Tesla model X £97,000 worth he has it on lease thank god, and it is not cheap but not without its problems took that on board to get the charging infrastructure needs it does a lot of miles in his job 2nd EV he’s had talked me into this also I don’t do many miles these days.

No I think the 5 is very good valve I have one at my dealers waiting for me to collect it been there since Christmas but as you know I feel this car as it is, the exclusive model should due to the roof rails issue not be on sale, I have asked MG on numerous occasions fix what ever is wrong with the rails are remove the stupid things because some one will load them at some point guaranteed.
But my friend my concerns are for safety on our roads that’s all.

So Jocko please don’t be put off by me I never intended that and I wish MG would submit one for testing that might make them do what ever needs to be done I was just agreeing with your post that’s all.
Les

I agree will all you have said Alan and have just read the link you posted about SAIC motor company in China very good read I have never said the cars where no good But as for the Friday specials comment the MG5 roof bars is not one of them.
it’s a design fault that is what it is and should never have been fitted if it can’t be used because someone will.

Having driven most cars under the sun (overstatment but you know what I mean) I really think my new MG5 is great. I have come straight from a new VW Golf GTD estate with all the whistles and bells on it and still think the MG5 is great. It may not have the build quality , the finess and the cache of my last car but it still has a lot going for it.
1/ It is 1 of the cheapest cars out there.
2/ It is the future and ICE are soooo last year.
3/ I went a fairly long trip the other day 80 miles return on motorway doing 70 mph most of the time and charged it overnight before and after and it cost my £2.45 in electricity. My Golf would have cost me about £8.00.
4/ It is comfortable with an excellent driving position, heated seats and rack/reach steering wheel and also soooo smooth to drive.
All in all I would not go back to my Golf. My views may change in the future but we shall see.

Funnily enough, I have never even considered safety ratings when buying a car, you see I don't intend to crash it if I can help it.

I have never considered it either, especially considering some of the cars I have owned over the years. Still, someone on another Forum said, and I quote, "The current MG5 lacks pretty much any active safety features and hasn’t been NCAP tested."
This made me wonder, after the roof rail fiasco, why.

By 'active' they mean the automatic driving aids which require various pieces of complex tech not present in the car. In my opinion, AEB and LKA are both poorly implemented systems which can sometimes cause dangerous situations. They probably do save lives on the whole, but they're still fairly new and far from perfect with many people suffering 'phantom braking' where the car performs an emergency stop for no clear reason. I'm really happy that they're not on the MG5.
