Finally, after 3 weeks, they replaced the complete instrument pod which they could of done much sooner - dealer blames MG for their bad warranty backup/service. No one sure why the original went wrong in the first place.

Thanks Clive but that was tried early on as was some odd reset routines including having the drivers door open for a number of minutes etc. Worrying thing is the MG Dealership and apparently MG themsellves are unable to resolve the issue. Still not light at the end of the tunnel on this one...
