Suddenly developed a worrying noise in travel, it increases in motor revolutions (not road speed) sounds like it has a noisy engine now??
has anyone else had a similar frightening problem

Yes you definitely don't have an engine.

What happens when you turn the air con/heat off completely?

I think I’d be heading straight to a dealer to have the motor and reduction gear checked. As it’s a fixed gear there isn’t any difference between road speed and motor speed.

You can't increase motor rpm without increasing road speed as there is a fixed relationship between the two (unless the wheels are off the ground of course). Are you sure you have an electric vehicle?

Thanks for the reply, it is going in to the garage next week for inspection,I think you are on the money with the reduction gear, it seems to be the only possible source of mechanical noise, apart from wheel bearings, drive shafts ,tyres. If it needs oil top up, or changing I hope it has not been killed by my recent use !

That’s why I put the ?? marks in, weak attempt at ironic humour, I think a later reply is spot on, reduction gear !, hope I have not ruined the reduction gear by using it to much since the noise began, it may simply have needed an oil change, MG seem to know less about some of these problems than than the people on this forum.

The Hyundai Kona had this fault. I had the reduction gear changed twice under warranty. Needless to say, I was soon shot of it as it would be an expensive repair out of warranty.

So far, the ZS has been faultless. ~(That's probably put the hex on it)

My car is out of warranty (no service history) suspect the supply and fitment of a new reduction gear unit will hit hard !, I have driven EVs for 14 years now, two Nissan leafs, Kia soul, mg. My next car will be a hybrid, for sure the removal of the congestion charge discount, the goverment price of vehicle discount, the cancellation of parking discounts, the addition of road taxation, ever increasing cost of electric charging, and the pitiful value of a five year old EV, plus ever rising cost of insurance premiums ( writing of damaged cars because of battery box minor damage, excessive repair cost for repairs and bodywork, especially Tesla’s !!, unexplained fires etc ) render the electric dream a busted flush for me ( not to mention old battery disposal problems )
It was good in the early days, but nothing lasts forever especially electric cars .

If it does turn out be be the motor and/or reduction gear and you are out of warranty, it might not be as bad as you think. Breakers are selling complete motor and gear units on eBay for less than £500 (the gear on its own would be even cheaper). It wouldn’t be nearly as hard as changing an ICE engine and, if you can’t DIY, an independent garage shouldn’t charge a fortune in labour. Might be a way to turn the quick to write off insurance fiasco into a win.

Off the wall idea, could the imitation sound machine have gone haywire? If the level of noise is not related to speed, that is possible.

When in drive, the entire drive train (motor, reduction gear etc) is locked to vehicle speed. So if the sound varies independently of road speed when in drive, and the car drives normally, then the noise probably can't be the drive train.

I haven't seen an answer to an earlier question: what happens when you turn off the air conditioning and heating?

There are other pumps that could be going noisy. They should be fairly easy to fix.

I read from the original post that the noise is when moving, "very noisy in travel," which would make AC and cooling pumps unlikely as it would be noisy when stationary too.

Why has your car got no service history?

Yes cleaner vehicle discount ends 2025 but could get pushed back, who needs a Government discount as the prices are currently well below RRP, depends on the borough as I assume you are in London, VED will probably be more on a hybrid than an EV, can you not charge at home? I think public charging will come down in price later this year. Insurance has gone up on all car types. A hybrid is reportedly the most likely to catch fire so you may want to check insurance groups.

Blimey. Sounds like a rant from the Daily Express.

Here's my ten cents based on almost 19 years of driving 'electrified' vehicles:

Reliability
I have driven and owned lots of different EV's and hybrid cars, starting with my Toyota Prius in 2005. And, as a high mileage driver, the only 'serious' issue I have experienced since 2005 was with my Hyundai Electric, which suffered a flat 12-volt battery, a known issue with that car.

Running Costs
EV's are not for everyone of course. I am fortunate that can I charge from home on a cheap time of use tariff, so my running costs are low, even when I need to use the public charging network on very long journeys my electric costs are well below petrol/diesel costs. In fact, the annual cost of petrol for our two Toyota hybrids we sold in 2020 would have been significantly more than we currently pay to power and heat our home and run two EV's. Yes, insurance costs have increased, disproportionately for EV's but it's not a deal-breaker financially for me given the running cost savings. Tesla's have always attracted higher premiums due to their group 47 to 50 rating, but this is only an issue if you are buying a Tesla, of course. The last service for my MG4 was £76.80, a fraction of the cost of an ICE car service. Road tax is payable on Hybrids too BTW and there is no reason EV's should not be subject to annual road tax, in my opinion.

EV batteries
EV batteries that are no longer deemed to be 'good enough' for vehicles are being recycled, repurposed, or repaired. My son is a technician at a major Jaguar Land Rover dealership and they are now repairing battery cells within faulty i-Pace battery packs that previously might have had to be repurposed or recycled. Great progress is being made in this domain.

Unexplained Fires
This seems to be a social media myth. Yes, there are EV's that catch fire but all the informed opinion on this subject is that EV's are less likely to catch fire than ICE vehicles with diesels having the highest risk (e.g. Luton Airport carpark fire)

Second-Hand EV Values
All second-hand vehicles, including EV's, have suffered hard of late. Like ICE vehicles, specific EV models will have higher or lower residual values based on supply and demand. This is a good thing for folks that can't stretch their budget to buy a brand-new EV. Who knows where residual values for EV's and ICE vehicles will land in the future. If a buyer has concerns, then leasing always provides a means to eliminate residual value anxiety.

Yes, I am sure JLR will get very good at replacing and repairing. They have a lot to work through. 😅
