Speeding. 🙄☹

On the way back from Sussex, going up the northerly stretches of the M6, I set Caliban's ACC to 80. I saw two or three police cars on watch, but none of them paid any attention to me. Just lucky, I suppose.
I bet 9 out of 10 times they wouldn't bother with you. Doing 80. Unless one of um just found out there wife's been cheating on them or something like that. Then your Defo booked. 🙄

Yes. Hence no tickets in 33 years driving.
A substantial amount of money in the legal system is provided by the drivers in the form of fines.
A certain publication might find it unpatriotic that you have refused to boost the nation's coffers, the implications might be reporters from the Daily Mail and the like queueing at your door and already pre-forming the headline. "Devon man prefers to put money into the Chinese economy than fund ours, he,s already stopped paying fuel tax." I'd keep a low profile. :D

That may be luck . I often noticed that on the M5 around Bristol . Police didn't seem concerned about people doing 90

Good grief, that could be within the tolerance of (a) your speedo, and (b) the speed camera.
Not so, Speedometers must never under read but they can over read upto 4 mph IIRC. Speed cameras are calibrated to a very tight tolerance.
My other half got a ticket for 31 in a 30, I wrote to chief constable of Lincolnshire asking for clarification, the ACPO guidelines were 10%+2 mph making a 30 limit 35 before prosecution. His reply was they're guidelines and in Lincolnshire he decided not to use the recommendation. My Mrs was so annoyed, we used to allow the police to use the upper floors of our premises for observing criminal activity in Gainsborough, she stopped that straight away LOL.

The 10% +1 or +2 thing was never a coherent national policy, local forces have always had the discretion to set their own rules. Far too many people think this is a thing when it very often isn't.
ACPO Guidelines only.

Revenge is a dish best served at any temperature you fancy!

Most of my bit of London is now 20 mph. Thank heavens for cruise control (which would not have worked at that low speed in my old manual ICE). A friend is a magistrate and she says lots of cases going to the bench for 23 in a 20 zone.

I believe that the impact of a crash at 20 mph is significantly lower than at 30 but the likelihood of a crash when sticking slavishly to 20 is higher - white van man inches from your bumper, constant watching for speed limit signs which change from 20 to 30 to 20 on a short stretch of road, jostling with cyclists who travel at that sort of speed, impatient drivers who overtake etc.

In my original home town of Bury, a normal size town by any standards, my brother lives in an outlying suburb. If he goes to the town's Tesco around 4 miles away he will be lucky if he gets into 4th gear. Traffic which used to be light, apart from rush hour, is now almost permanent rush hour up until 10 pm. The same situation exists on a road I know well in East Devon, Sidmouth to Exeter, it's almost permanent nose to tail traffic (slow), when 20 years ago it was almost a joy to travel on. Speeding by default will become a thing of the past only to be remembered on forums such as this by watery-eyed pensioners recalling their stories to incomprehending youngsters, "Mum, granddad says he once went over 70 and overtook someone, he has been overdoing the Benylin again."

[Edit moderator: For non-UK residents, Benylin is a popular cough medicine, some forms of which have strong ingredients like codeine. ]

Merci beaucoup, edit moderator, in an earlier post up the page I mentioned the daily mail, not in capitals, apologies but that was intentional. (Grammatically incorrect but I cannot bring myself to capitalise that tardy rag sheet.) Changing the wording may suggest I have altered my views.

Just to add one more anecdote to this discussion on speed limits and police discretion.

Many years ago now my wife received a fine and points for doing 31mph on a 30 mph road! She was clocked by a policeman sitting in his car, using a radar gun. The official notification letter of her fine etc., confirmed her speed as being measured as 31.
There is a speed camera in Hereford on the A465 at what is no longer the Three Counties Hotel. Now it may be apocryphal, but I've heard tell of people being done for 31 mph through that camera. Many locals (and I mean Hereford frequenters, it being a rural county) slow right down to well under 25 mph on approaching it. The best times to go through it are 08:00 to 09:30 ish Monday to Friday and most of Saturday morning after about 9 a.m., when it is usually impossible to get above 20 mph.

I regularly used to use (regular) cruise control in 20 and 30 mph zones in the Disco 3, but I just can't get used to using the ACC (yet) in the MG5.

ACC is so much better than the old regular cruise. With our busy motorways the regular cruise used to be off more than it was on, now it's permanently on slowing me down, speeding me up whilst I relax and enjoy the ride.

I never had the old regular cruise on a previous car, and I never understood what use it was if you had to keep braking and accelerating to accommodate other traffic. ACC on the motorway is fantastic.

Different game with regular cruise control, you could increase/decrease in 1 mph steps or cut/resume so it was an anticipation game could you just use the cruise to match speeds, braking was always last resort. At least it didn't suddenly brake when you approached a bend in the road.

I prefer to use the speed limiter when the speed limit is below 60mph or in busy traffic. I feel more in control of the car but that's just my personal preference.

The latest updates seem to have resolved this. (I don't think it's linked to an Infotainment update). As well swapping the 1/5 mph adjustment (1 toggle is now 1 mph; toggle and hold for a second is 5 mph - this seems far more logical and controllable) it also now keeps up the speed on sweeping bends; it only reduces speed when you start to turn the steering wheel a lot more. :)

I use it most of the time on motorway journeys, but the amount of cars that cut in the moment they are past me is ridiculous. My car then slows down until they've pulled away enough. Quite frustrating, but it has made me think to not pull in so quickly when overtaking HGVs as they take a lot more to get back up to cruise speed if they are using it.

This has happened to me but in general even if they cut in quickly so long as they are still going away from me mine keeps going at set speed. I have mine set at max distance too. The annoying ones are those that pull in and then slow down instead of keeping going.
