(I must get the hang of multiple quotes!) It's nothing to do with sturdy or otherwise - the manufacturer has just apparently opted to not submit it for type approval for towing.
That’s what I have on my Land Rover and I had a very lengthy debate with them about the towbar which had a sticker with a lower S value than advertised. They do rather play fast and loose with type approval I’d have to say. I bet if you asked for the type approval certificate it would be for an...
But that takes us back to the type approval issue. If there’s no warning light on the dash, or perhaps a buzzer, then the vehicle hasn’t been approved for towing. The fact that an aftermarket cable harness doesn’t activate the vehicle warning system and has its own audible warning is a different...
Very interesting. As it’s a European Directive (dating from 1994) it should be implemented in a similar way across all member states which is why it would be very interesting to know what the type approval certificate of the tow bar says. But a quick look at the European site produces this...
It would seem that the ZS has a towing limit of 500kg and a noseweight limit of 50kg, so in effect of no use whatsoever other than dump runs.
But in any event it’s not type approved for the EV, even if it does fit. I’d also be surprised if the wiring connection was available in the rear of the...
As I said, I would ask them for a copy of the type approval for the tow bar as no such thing exists. They will just have fitted a ZS towbar which is illegal. Does it also have the trailer cable harness?
I would suggest that you ask them for a copy of the type approval certificate for the tow bar to verify that it is approved for use on a ZS EV and not just a ZS
The fact that you 'can' fit a tow bar doesn’t mean that you’re permitted to. The EC Directive is quite clear - if a mechanical coupling device, i.e. a tow bar, is fitted to a vehicle then both the coupling device and the vehicle must be type approved for that purpose. For whatever reason the ZS...
It’s hard to pin down the exact regulation governing towbars but it would seem that any towbar fitted to a vehicle registered on or after 1 August 1998 must be type approved for that vehicle. Likewise, any vehicle first registered on or after that date with a tow bar fitted must be type...
Just be glad you didn’t buy the MG5 EV as not only is it not approved for fitting a tow bar, the roof rails are purely decorative and not approved for carrying any load!
Is it true that PHEVs need to have the petrol/Diesel engine running in order for the heater and demister to work? If the car was used mainly for the sort of short journeys that could be done as an EV, much of the time in our weather you’d want the heater and demister on. If that required the ICE...
Well it would seem from these very helpful replies - thank you all - that, given our very basic electricity supply system over here with nothing other than Economy 7 to offer savings, a charger that can be set to come on at a predetermined time each night is probably sufficient for my needs. It...
Thanks again. I’m still at the planning stage so can’t test anything yet but it was certainly my understanding from reading the threads about software updates that timed charging was now possible.
Many thanks. It doesn’t sound promising, I have to say but I must admit I thought that timed charging was now possible with the ZS EV after one of the software upgrades last year?
Good advice, Iain, many thanks. Over here in 'Norn Iron' local contractors are plentiful, but whether they know about EV chargers remains to be seen. But a good approach.
