It doesn't make it more efficient otherwise it would be on all the time because that would be worth something. It does make it harder to be inefficient but ultimately does nothing you can't do in normal mode.
For the clueless it's a magic button that increases the range of the car rather than estimated range. Maybe of worth if you had really bad motor control in your right leg but if it was that bad then you probably shouldn't be driving.
