battery charging
A battery charger, recharger, or simply charger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge. Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging. Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.
I have a nearly 3 year old MG4 bought from new. I do very low mileage and have only charged the car from home with the cable lead that came with the car. Yesterday when I noticed my car stopped charging at 94%, we could smell smoke in our living room. I then noticed the 3 pin plug that goes into...
I find that having regenerative braking enabled is very dangerous in this car.
Its efficiency slowing the car depends on how much battery is full. If it is full, it will not slow down the car and i find my self in panic when it does that.
If I let go gas peddal I would expect that it will always...
charged our ZS (standard range) last night - according to the charger we used 28.7kWh over the 4 hours we have cheap electricity.
On the car battery this translated to +36% which by my calculation is 18.4kWh.
So only 64% of the power went into the battery, this seems really poor as I would...
Apologies for the pedantic question (still new to EVs), but I'm on the verge of getting a MG S5, and looking for some clarification on charging.
According to data on Autotrader, charging via 50kW public charger, the S5 takes over 2 hours to reach 80%. Yet most other cars in its class and...
Hi all
Winter is coming and just like ICE the 12V battery needs to be monitored and a lot of people over look this. Up until last month I used my car every day and did 18 miles each week day, now I have retired the car is not used every day and also a lot of short journeys so the 12V battery may...
Hi, forum,
Just have fully charged my HS PHEV from empty. I used Pod point 3S wall changer, the app indicated it took 27 kWh. I wonder if anyone noticed over 24 kWh consumption when fully charging your car from empty.
Also, on paper it is said HS PHEV battery capacity is 24.7 kWh, taking...
Hi,
I’m the very happy owner of a 3 week old phev and I would like some guidance please from all you experienced electric drivers.
I am using a granny charger (10 amp max) to charge for 5 hours off peak about twice a week as we don’t generally stray too far from home and this is more than...
I am having problems finding information about the 12 V battery. For instance, what type is it, lead-acid, lithium, …? How is it kept charged, and when is it charged? Is there a ‘utility’ mode that runs the displays etc from the big battery?
I own MG 4 - SE from 2023. Earlier I could able to set battery charge limit to 80%. I noticed for some months I couldn't be able to set charging at battery health mode. I have been to dealer 3 times, they updated software but unfortunately it doesn't work. Now dealer replied that MG -4 SE...
Hi. I have a new HS PHEV. It has been OK for a few weeks, but I now have issues that appear to be linked to a lowish 12v battery charge.
I previously had a Ford Kuga PHEV. When it was plugged-in the app would occasionally display "charging 12v battery" other than when the traction battery was...
I am having problem with charging battery...when connect a car to charge the light doesnt show but on display panel it says it is connecting....it stays like that and battery doesnt charge at all. Charger model is AC 22kW.
Once I had message: HV battery shut off.
Any help guys would mean a...
Hi all,
I like to keep the 12 volt battery in any vehicle I have maintained. There doesn’t seem to be a really accessible grounding point in the boot of the Hybrid+ (apart from the negative of the battery, which is generally considered safer to avoid), does anyone know if the battery can be...
Hello everyone,
Just hoping to get answer on the concern i have regarding MG4 electric 64 KWH battery. I travel 250 km everyday and need to travel on around 110 km/hr. I have attached the below image. I need to charge everyday upto 90%. Every day it reduces to around 10%. Can someone please help...
My MG ZS EV is now 14 months old, and I am having a problem charging it fully. I can only achieve, at 90% charge, 190 miles, where as I used to charge it up to 260 miles + I’ve tried on 7kW and rapid chargers. Unfortunately I am unable to charge from home ( live in a flat) . Am I setting up...
Has anyone run into this issue? Charging overnight and started from approx 15%. It stopped at 88% even when charge window was for another 2 hours.
This is the worst I've seen of this issue, I've had large charges previously where they've stopped at 97/98% but I not really questioned it much...
Hello friends,
I have a trophy LR in UK. I work from home and only do short school runs on weekdays. Shopping and occassional day trips on weekends.
So basically 6 miles round trip school run on weekdays (30 miles) and shopping and trips on weekends anywhere between 20 and 200 miles. Weekly...
Has anybody found a solution for a portable 12V charger?
I’m looking for something to keep in the boot should a 12V battery failure occur while away from home.
Standard chargers all require 240V supply and I'm not sure if any portable boosters can be used to trickle charge.
Today my partner had a longer than expected drive and wanted to "brim the tank" before setting off using the 3 pin charger but despite being in charge for 8 hrs nothing happened.
Is there some trick to it we're unaware of?
Points (possibly) worth noting:
It was already at 80% when she plugged...
Last night when I checked the 12v battery voltage on the iSmart app it was showing 12.2v. This morning at 7:00am it had gone down to 12.1v.
I haven't driven the car or unlocked it since yesterday afternoon and the last time it was on charge was 6 days ago. I've just checked it again (10:00am) on...
