battery charging

A battery charger, recharger, or simply charger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge. Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging. Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.

    Not Great Economy

Hi Had the S5 for around 3 months now after replacing ZS EV. Enjoying the car but the economy is worse than the ZS by a margin. Getting 2.8 miles/kWh. Mainly short journeys and charged to 100 per cent once since I had the car otherwise charge to 80 per cent. Any ideas on how to improve economy...

Hello, I have a query regarding the charging of battery when car is running on fuel. I have noticed that the battery gets charged upto 12% only even though if you are running the car for close to 200km. In other cars and some other forum mentions that when running for 150km the car gets charged...

    New S5 Owner checking in

Just thought I'd check on on this thread. My new S5 Trophy LR was delivered earlier today, my first foray into electric cars. I left it charging at work and popped back earlier, it was nicely charged to 100%, my 25 mile trip home has reduced that to 87% (not sure if that's to be expected or...

Home charging cable plug melt down

I have a nearly 3 year old MG4 bought from new. I do very low mileage and have only charged the car from home with the cable lead that came with the car. Yesterday when I noticed my car stopped charging at 94%, we could smell smoke in our living room. I then noticed the 3 pin plug that goes into...

    Regenerative braking inconsistency and danger

I find that having regenerative braking enabled is very dangerous in this car. Its efficiency slowing the car depends on how much battery is full. If it is full, it will not slow down the car and i find my self in panic when it does that. If I let go gas peddal I would expect that it will always...

    poor charging efficiency

charged our ZS (standard range) last night - according to the charger we used 28.7kWh over the 4 hours we have cheap electricity. On the car battery this translated to +36% which by my calculation is 18.4kWh. So only 64% of the power went into the battery, this seems really poor as I would...
