battery charging
A battery charger, recharger, or simply charger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge. Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging. Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.
My MG ZS EV is now 14 months old, and I am having a problem charging it fully. I can only achieve, at 90% charge, 190 miles, where as I used to charge it up to 260 miles + I’ve tried on 7kW and rapid chargers. Unfortunately I am unable to charge from home ( live in a flat) . Am I setting up...
Has anyone run into this issue? Charging overnight and started from approx 15%. It stopped at 88% even when charge window was for another 2 hours.
This is the worst I've seen of this issue, I've had large charges previously where they've stopped at 97/98% but I not really questioned it much...
Hello friends,
I have a trophy LR in UK. I work from home and only do short school runs on weekdays. Shopping and occassional day trips on weekends.
So basically 6 miles round trip school run on weekdays (30 miles) and shopping and trips on weekends anywhere between 20 and 200 miles. Weekly...
Has anybody found a solution for a portable 12v charger?
I’m looking for something to keep in the boot should a 12v battery failure occur while away from home.
Standard chargers all require 240v supply and im not sure if any portable boosters can be used to trickle charge.
Today my partner had a longer than expected drive and wanted to "brim the tank" before setting off using the 3 pin charger but despite being in charge for 8 hrs nothing happened.
Is there some trick to it we're unaware of?
Points (possibly) worth noting:
It was already at 80% when she plugged...
Last night when I checked the 12v battery voltage on the iSmart app it was showing 12.2v. This morning at 7:00am it had gone down to 12.1v.
I haven't driven the car or unlocked it since yesterday afternoon and the last time it was on charge was 6 days ago. I've just checked it again (10:00am) on...
Hi, my second newbie question
I've spent/invested some time reading through the various discussions about how charging hygiene for the LR models (mine is a new very orange Trophy!). I have solar on the roof and a modestly sized GiveEnergy house battery. Part of the rationale in replacing our...
Occasionally our car will be at 80%charge overnight but next day is bright and sunny so we want to use the surplus from the solar panels to top up the car , so i have been resetting it to 100% . Is this a bad thing to do ? ie is there a limit as to how many times you charge it to 100% ?
PS...
Straight forward question:
Is it worth it to charge the electric battery while driving in a highway on petrol?
Further questions:
Should I deplete the battery and then switch to petrol on long distances?
Is there a maintenance reason to have always some battery left?
Having returned after 16 days on holiday I found the 12v battery to be too flat to be bothered to unlock my MG4 Trophy LR. (The HV battery was left at 60% plus before trip.) I couldn't trickle charge the 12v battery, seemingly because the current draw was too high. I disconnected the positive...
I have a 2021 MG ZS EV that is now coming up to two years old. Currently it has 30,000 kilometers on the clock and is due for its second service in a few weeks.
Normally I charge at home using a 32 amp circuit. My charger allows me to select the amperage for the charge - I nearly always...
Hi
I've just discovered this forum and I'm looking forward to learning more about my car.
I picked up a 2020 MG ZS EV Exclusiv last week. It's my first EV. We've had a few teething problems trying to get it charged but I think we're getting there now.
But after looking through some previous...
Hello,
We have recently purchased an MG4 EV Long range vehicle and have had a tethered Zappi fitted at home. We have noticed over the past several weeks that when we charge the car to 100% we have a vast reduction in the estimated range on the onboard screen from 262 miles down to 219 miles. The...
Hi all, just want to share a few strange things happening recently and if anyone has had similar experience - MG ZS Mk2 SR, current odometer reading 1800miles:
1) Recently I've been seeing around 110 miles travelled with still 45% left in battery. Really chuffed and thinking that gives me...
Been look at gen2/mk2/facelift posts and it looks like people that got the car a bit earlier it charges at 14.1 when ready/driving but my Sept car is charging at 13.8 I did wounder if this is one of the updates?
If you get the 14.1v does the unlock car release the charge cable and restart if you...
I've not received my ZS LR EV (and don't expect to for a loooong time yet, it was only ordered in April), but after reading all the 12v battery woes on here, I want to plan ahead.
I currently keep a smart charger connected to my existing ICE car to keep the battery in good condition, can I...
I wonder if longer term owners of the 2021 MG ZS EV might be able to share their experience about battery charging?
I've owned the ZS EV for about six months now and almost always charge at home on a 7kW wallbox scheduled for overnight off-peak power rates. This practice follows the MG...
